Audio not coming through headphones
Sound cutting out/not coming through headphones or sound coming out is distorted
Headphones aren’t working
- Try and plug in a different set of headphones and see if the headphones themselves are the problem.
Dirt/residue build up
- Try spraying isopropyl alcohol into the audio port and then plug in and unplug the jack on your headphones a couple times to help clean out the dirt and residue. Using a Q-tip or cloth dampened in isopropyl alcohol, clean the area around the audio jack of the controller. Carefully dry off any excess alcohol with a paper towel or dry cloth.
Broken audio jack
- If trying out new headphones or cleaning the audio jack doesn’t work, your audio jack may be broken. To replace the audio jack, follow this guide.
Controller inputting movement by itself
Your controller is sending input to the console/PC without you touching the joystick
Dirt/residue build up
- Check to see if there is any dirt built up under the joystick. If so, take a Q-tip, cotton ball, or soft cloth and dampen it with isopropyl alcohol. Apply the alcohol under the joystick and remove any visible dirt build up. Carefully dry off any excess alcohol with a dry paper towel or cloth.
Sticks not correctly calibrated
- Your joystick may be incorrectly calibrated. The recalibration method is different depending on what platform you're using the controller on.
- On PC, press the Windows key + R on your keyboard, type joy.cpl and press enter. Then select controller → Properties → Settings → calibrate and follow on screen instructions.
- On Xbox, press the Xbox button → Profile & System → Settings → Devices and connections → Controllers & headsets. This will bring you to the Xbox Accessories app. Once in the app, select Recalibration options → select which joystick you wish to recalibrate (left/right) → follow on screen instructions.
Broken joystick
- If the previous steps don’t work, there may be something wrong with the inner mechanism of the joystick. To replace the joystick, follow this guide.
D-pad not responding /D-pad stuck
The D-pad is not taking input or D-pad not pressing in correctly
Dirt/residue build up
- Check to see if there is any dirt build up by the D-pad. If so, use a Q-tip dampened with isopropyl alcohol and clean the surrounding area. If this doesn’t work use a vacuum around the D-pad to try and bring up any dirt or residue stuck underneath the D-pad.
Broken D-pad
- If cleaning the dirt/residue off the controller doesn’t work your D-pad may be broken. To replace the D-pad, follow this guide.
Triggers not responding/Triggers stuck
The triggers are not pressing in correctly or not responding
Dirt/residue build up
- Check to see if there is any dirt build up in the crevices of the triggers. If so, take a Q-tip, cottonball, or soft cloth and dampen it with isopropyl alcohol. Apply the alcohol under the joystick and remove any visible dirt build up. Carefully dry off any excess alcohol with a paper towel or dry cloth.
Broken triggers
- If the previous step doesn’t work, there may be something wrong with the inner mechanism of your triggers. To replace the trigger, follow this guide.
Controller Is Not Vibrating
The controller is not vibrating with action in the game.
Vibration turned off on console
- If your controller is not vibrating first check to make sure your vibration setting is set to on in your console settings. First select the XBox button and then select Profile & System and then Settings. Once in settings select Accessibility then proceed to Controller. Here you can then select Vibration settings and turn it on if it is off.
Game may not support Vibration
- If your controller is not vibrating it is likely that the game you are playing may not support vibration. You can check this on the game details, or the developers website.
Weak or No Vibration
- If the vibration is turned on, on your console, and the game supports vibration it may be time to replace the vibration motors. To do this see this replacement guide.
Bumpers Getting Stuck
The bumpers no longer register inputs.
Sticky or Jammed Bumpers
- If your bumpers are getting jammed or stuck it may be debris interfering with the bumpers. First attempt using a Q-tip and dunking it in rubbing alcohol. Run this Q-tip over the cracks and crevices and attempt to remove any debris blocking the bumpers for working. If the Q-tip and rubbing alcohol you may have to remove the bumpers from the controller to remove the debris. If you have to remove the bumpers see this guide.
Broken Bumper
- If ensuring there is no debris stopping your bumpers, it may be time to replace them. To replace the bumpers follow this replacement guide.
