The power button broke, fell down in, shorted out the charging port. Seeing as its out of warranty and no way to repair it, I opened the case, pulled out the power button, and now we use a tiny screwdriver to gently make contact with the points to turn the tablet on and off. The easiest way to avoid this, though, is to keep it charged, then just plug/unplug it to wake up the screen.
