Laptop not charging while plugged in
If the plug comes out, my laptop turns off.
Battery is beginning to fail
Over time, a battery might begin to fail due to repeated use. According to Dell, the battery should work for 300 recharges. However, if the battery is draining too quickly, resetting it is a potential solution to preserve the life of your battery. To do this follow these steps:
- Shutdown and close laptop.
- Unplug AC adapter.
- Remove battery.
- Plug in AC adapter and open laptop.
- Turn on and let it fully boot up.
- Shutdown again.
- Replace battery and AC adapter.
- Open up the laptop and start up as normal.
Faulty battery
If resetting the battery did not fix the problem, you might have a faulty battery which needs replacement. This step-by-step guide will show you how to replace the battery.
Sound still running after program is closed
Frozen is still playing even after you exit the movie player.
Unresponsive program
Sometimes a program may be unresponsive even after it looks like the program is closed. One way to fix this is by restarting your computer either by holding down the power button or by taking out the battery.
SyncUp may have stopped working
This computer's default video playback is SyncUp which is also Dell's cloud storage for music, videos, and photos. This program is known to have some problems. A better video playback program is Widows Media Player which can be easily switched in the system settings of your computer located in the control panel.
Laptop is Too Hot
Is your laptop coming down with a terrible fever? Have the programs stopped responding or the fan is making a lot of noise? Your laptop might be overheating.
This heat can cause permanent damage to your laptop if it is not fixed. For this reason, you might consider installing a fail-safe such as Core Temp Monitor. This is a free program, that will tell you the temperature of each processor in your system in real time.
The Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 has a safe temperature range between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. You can input this range into Core Temp's Options > Overheat Protection. The program will alert you with a pop-up message if the temperature goes beyond this range. If this program continuously sends you pop-ups, further action might be needed.
Objects are blocking the vents
When the laptop is on an uneven surface like someone’s lap or a bed, the laptop may have difficulty taking in the air which may cause it to get hot. Also, try to keep items at least 6 inches away from your vents to provide good airflow.
Dust clogging the vents
The most common reason for a computer overheating is dust buildup inside the computer. Dust can build up on the vents along the bottom of the laptop where the computer takes in air or on the right side towards the bottom of the laptop where the air should be leaving your computer. If there is only a little bit of air coming out, the vents may be clogged. To unclog the vents:
*Take a can of compressed air and run it along the vents. This can also be used as a preventative measure to keep the vents clean.
If cleaning the vents did not improve airflow in the computer, there may be issues with the fan inside the computer being clogged or not spinning properly. This guide can help you reach the fan inside the laptop to either clean it with compressed air, as you did with the vents or replace it if there are damages.
You are overworking your CPU
When using multiple programs at once, you are placing a strain on your CPU (Central Processing Unit) causing it to work faster. This causes the fans to spin more to reduce the heat that the CPU is generating. By limiting the programs you have open, you can reduce heat. To do this:
- Hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete and go to Task Manager.
- From here, you can look at your processes to see which programs are utilizing your CPU.
Bad batteries
It is not advised to keep your battery at 100% or 0% most of the time. However, it is very common for people to leave their devices plugged in at all times which is bad for the battery. Not only can this cause it to fail, it can also cause it to heat up.
- You might need to replace your battery. You can follow this battery guide for a step by step instruction on how to do so.
Hardware Failures
If none of the above issues solved the overheating problem, you might have issues with other hardware that may require replacement parts.
Dell Support Assist is a program that is preinstalled on all Dell laptops that check the health of hardware and software. To do this:
- Search for SupportAssist in your programs.
- Click checkup.
- Select a diagnostic test to run.
You may also use PSA or Dell Preboot System Assessment to check for hardware issues. This process provides you with codes that help determine any errors. However, you may need to talk to a Dell Interactive Support Agent or view Dell’s reference table of error codes to determine their meaning. To do this:
- Restart your computer and press the f12 key when the Dell logo appears.
- Use your arrow keys to select diagnostics, then press enter
- Follow the prompts listed to initiate the assessment.
- You will then want to write down any error codes listed on-screen.
If these tests have indicated that your computer does have a hardware failure, you may follow this step-by-step guide to replacing your fan
Sound is not audible while computer is on
I cannot hear my music when the laptop is on
Connected to the wrong sound output
With the production of external speakers and Bluetooth speakers, a computer might have multiple sound outputs. If you are unable to hear the sound, your computer might be connected to a different output. To test this:
- Access Control Panel from the start menu
- Click "Hardware and Sound" and then click "Sound"
- In the playback tab , you should be able to see all of the devices capable of producing sound.
- Right click the stereo and click test to configure your settings.
- In these settings, you are also able to select a default device to prevent this issue in the future.
Low volume
If the volume is too low or muted the sound will not play. To check this:
- Select the microphone icon on the bottom right corner of the system tray
- Make sure there is no red circle with a slash through it. This indicates that your computer is muted.
- Raise the volume bar higher if the bar happens to be set very low.
Hardware Failures
If none of the above issues solved the sound problem, you might have issues with other hardware that may require replacement parts. Following this guide, you can replace the speakers.
