Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 Randomly Shuts Down
Background
The Intel version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 launched in February 2022, with the AMD version launching in June that same year, and was available to ship within the United States, United States Minor Outlying Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands. MSRP at launch was $1,399 and this device was in production until 2024. ItThe T14 Gen 3 is a highly capable Windows laptop marketed primarily toward business and professional users. It features a sleek and portable design, but with a diverse array of I/O ports and a relatively high level of serviceability.
The device is quite modular, meaning virtually all common repairs are possible with basic Phillips screwdrivers and pry tools. The keyboard replacement procedure stands out as one of the easiest and most accessible of any modern laptop, and the back cover opens easily for access to other components. The biggest repairability drawbacks include the soldered DDR4 memory (although one SO-DIMM slot is included for expansion purposes), and I/O ports that are mostly soldered to the motherboard. Overall, the T14 Gen 3 earns a commendable 7/10 on iFixit's official laptop repairability index. This line of devices in particular gets praise for its performance and solid build quality, generally being able to handle whatever task users need it for, and while there are no known recalls for this particular device one of the most common reports for the Intel model of this generation is overheating and hot spots in the keyboard area during heavy loads. Many other users report issues with poor battery life, leading to worsening performance over time.
The ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 is part of Lenovo’s ThinkPad line of devices, which started in 1992. In 2022 they were reported to have sold over 200 million devices from this line, and are currently still producing new models. With its sister devices, the T15 and T16 (since 2022), one generation (Gen) of devices are released in tandem, progressively rising in Gen (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, etc.) as the technology and design improves. Each tier comes with varying technical specifications and hardware but uses the same platform, and older models are eventually phased out of production. The ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 is the successor to the T14 Gen 2 (2021), offering upgrades to the CPU, RAM, and battery capacity. The successor to the T14 Gen 3, the T14 Gen 4 (2023), also offers upgrades to the CPU and RAM, while also offering upgrades to the front-facing camera.
Identification
The T14 Gen 3 is most readily identified by the printed labeling on the base cover, which includes the model name and number. Its physical characteristics include a 14" 16:10 IPS display with slightly thinner bezels than on the preceding model, and of course the bright red TrackPoint (pointing stick) on the keyboard that has long been characteristic of ThinkPads. The display swings open to a maximum angle of 180 degrees.
The left side of the laptop includes an Ethernet jack, dual USB-C ports, an HDMI port, a USB-A (3.2 Gen 1) port, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack; the right side includes a Kensington security-lock slot, a SmartCard reader, and one additional USB-A port. An optional SIM card slot is located on the back edge near the left-side display hinge.
