Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 3 Battery Draining Fast
Here are some things you can do if your ThinkPad's battery is draining fast.
Overworked device:
Accessories can add extra strain to the battery. Disconnect all accessories from the device one by one. Try to plug each accessory in one by one to see if any noticeable battery drain occurs.
Restarting your device can give the device a fresh start, and help to reduce the overall load on the battery
Screen Brightness Set to High:
Check that your screen brightness is not set too high.
- Fn + Home to increase brightness
- Fn + End to decrease brightness
Too Many Programs Running at Once:
Close down programs or applications running in the background using the task manager.
- Press "Ctl+alt+del" to open the task manager window
- Click "task manager" to open the task manager application
- Right click the program
- Press "close program"
- Check for malware or viruses using a tool like "Windows Defender", or any other malware scanning program, to help detect harmful files.
System drivers are out of date:
Outdated software can add strain to the device and cause the battery to drain quicker than expected. Updating drivers can help make sure your battery is always running its best.
- If you are NOT able to access internet with your device:
- Flip over your device and look at the black label on the bottom right corner of the device.
- The serial number should be 8 digits with this format XX-XXXXXX.
- Navigate to this link.
- Type in the serial number you found on your device.
- Click on Manual Update.
- From here you can select any and all drivers to update to current version using the download button.
- Download drivers to a USB or external device and transfer them to your device.
The operating system is out of date:
Older versions of an operating system can add strain to your battery.
- Click the Start button
- Open All Programs
- Click Lenovo
- Run Lenovo System Update.
- OR
- Click the Start button.
- Open All Programs.
- Click Lenovo Care.
- Run "Update Your System".
Power Settings Set to "High-Performance Mode":
Lenovo offers an application called Lenovo Vantage which can be used to view and adjust power draw settings of the battery. A guide for using this program can be found on the Lenovo website.
Damaged or faulty battery:
A damaged battery can have a reduced lifespan and holding capacity and could need to be replaced.
- Check if the manufacturer has made any recalls on your model battery.
- Check the serial number of the battery, located on the battery within the device. A guide for this can be found HERE(future link).
- Navigate to this link, and enter the serial number of your battery in the box provided on the right-hand side of the page.
- Check the battery for any physical damage like swelling, cracks or corrosion on the battery. A guide for finding your battery can be found here.
- Also check the terminals and make sure they are clean with no corrosion.
- The battery might need to be replaced, if all above solutions do not work.
