Background
Back in 2013, Dr Dre released a speaker design like no one had ever seen before on the market. It was cylindrical, having a rubber shell sealed with silicone and a mesh material near the front. The speaker, called the “Beats Pill,” took the world by storm, selling millions worldwide. The most significant driving point at the time was the cost of the product, it wasn’t just your everyday speaker. What made this one great speaker and why do so many people still favor it? Let’s talk about it.
Dr. Dre wanted to create a speaker with crystal clear audio with deep bass allowing listeners to feel the beat. Removing the “underwater” feeling that a lot of small speakers can carry also helps the sound be clear. The speaker was equipped with a fully re-engineered racetrack woofer, achieving this with stronger neodymium magnets. The sound quality of the Beats Pill was fantastic, being able to connect to many products. This speaker was designed to pair with all iPhones and MacBooks with ease, allowing consumers to connect for meetings, facetime, and phone calls with great sound quality. With this driving point, it was no wonder Apple wanted to take over in 2015. The Beats Pill was designed to be portable yet durable, but exactly how durable?
The speaker was designed with an IP67 rating making it resistant to water and dust. There were six indicates total protection against dust and seven indicates protection against water (for a short period of time against water). With all of this, the Beats Pill could be submerged in a meter of water for around thirty minutes before water would start to damage the speaker. All of this makes the speaker highly durable for most people's everyday life, being able to be played for 24 hours on a single charge.
With all this, the burning question still stands, how much was the speaker? The Beats Pill was sold at retail for $150 before taxes, making it one of the cheapest speakers on the market. It was no wonder why the speaker was so popular amongst consumers. Sadly in 2022, Apple discontinued the speaker to pursue other ventures in the technical world.
