Device Won’t Turn On
Your device is unresponsive when attempting to turn on
Device is Uncharged
Ensure that the device is charged by plugging it into an outlet. If possible, try using a different power cable as the one you use currently may be damaged.
Note: There is a small blue LED next to the charging port as well as the charging brick. You can check that this light is on as an indicator of whether or not the device is charging.
Software Malfunction
If the device has power and the charger works then you may need to perform a hard reset to turn it on again. Data will not be lost in this soft reset.
- Ensure your device is powered off by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
- Once your device is off, hold down both the refresh key (above the 4 key) and the power key simultaneously for 10 seconds.
- Release the keys. If your device still hasn’t started up, press the power key once more.
Battery is Bad
The life of your rechargeable battery diminishes over time. If your battery has lost its ability to hold a charge or has been damaged it will need to be replaced.
Motherboard Broken
The main board of your Chromebook may need to be replaced. Note that this will remove all data on the device. However, data such as calendars, browser passwords, and email sync with your Google account. This data can be synced back once the motherboard has been replaced.
Display is Too Dark or Completely Black
Your screen is too dark or even completely black but you know the device is on because the power light is on and you can hear sound from the speaker when turning the device on.
Brightness Settings Too Low
Your brightness may be too low and you may just need to adjust it to a brighter setting.
1. Press the key above the number 9 key (picture of a big sun/gear looking icon) and this will turn the brightness up.
Screen is Broken
Try plugging in an external monitor into the Chromebook with an HDMI cable. If a picture shows up on the external screen then you might have a malfunctioning laptop display screen that needs replacing.
The Battery Won’t Charge
Your charger won’t charge your Chromebook and the charging light won’t light up anymore
Charger is Broken
Check these steps to ensure your charger is functioning properly.
- Ensure that the power outlet that you are using is working by plugging something else into it to see if it works or charges.
# Check that the charger for physical damage such as cracked wall brick, frayed or melted wires, and that the male charging connector is intact.
- Check to see if a blue light comes on at the laptop and power brick when plugged in.
Battery is Dead
The battery only has so many cycles. If your device still has power, you can check the battery health using a utility called CROSH.
- Press Control+Alt+T on your keyboard.
- A terminal should open up. Within the terminal, type “battery_test” and hit Enter.
- You should now be able to read your battery’s health listed as a percentage. If your battery’s health is low enough it will no longer be able to hold a charge.
If your device will not power on, consider that the battery may have reached the end of its life cycle. A typical battery for this device will last 300-500 cycles, so if your battery has performed above and beyond these metrics, it may be time to replace it.
Port is Broken
If the port that connects the charger to the motherboard is loose, it may need to be replaced. The charging port is soldered to the motherboard and will require a full motherboard replacement to fix.
Trackpad is not Functioning Correctly
Your Trackpad is unresponsive, is moving the mouse different from the input you give, or is moving the mouse with no input at all
Trackpad is Dirty
A piece of dirt or dust may have become lodged into your trackpad and is hindering its functionality.
- Ensure there is no visible dirt or dust on your trackpad. If there is, use a dry cloth to wipe it clean.
- Drumroll your fingers on the trackpad a few times to see if you get a response.
Trackpad is Broken
If your trackpad has become broken, you may need to replace it. Try these steps before replacing:
- Connect an external mouse and check if the mouse pointer on the screen works correctly.
- Restart your Chromebook. You can do this by just turning your Chromebook off, then turning it on again.
- Hard reset your Chromebook. Do this by turning the Chromebook off, then holding both the power key and refresh key (directly above the 4 key) simultaneously for 10 seconds.
No Sound from Speakers
Your speakers do not play any audio or the sound is distorted.
Volume Settings Too Low
The volume settings of the laptop may be too low or completely off.
- Press the speaker volume up button that is directly above the ‘+,=’ key.
- Make sure the volume from the source, such as a Youtube video, is also turned all the way up
Speakers Broken
Try connecting external speakers or headphones to the 3.5mm jack on the right side of the laptop. If sound plays normally then you may need to replace the laptop speakers.
