Background:
Amazon introduced the first Kindle in 2007, after beginning development in 2004 under the codename 'Fiona.'. The Kindle, meaning, ‘to light a fire,’ has continued to be produced in cheaper and slimmer models. The first iteration, the Amazon Kindle, cost $399, which is equivalent to about $612 in 2025. The current models in the Generation 12 line, such as the Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen, were priced starting at $160.
The Kindle system was designed to be used as an E-Ink E-Reader, meaning it's meant to simulate reading a real book on a virtual device while reducing eye strain and readability in the sunlight. Beyond this, Kindle devices also support Wikipedia and dictionary tools that allow users to look up words within their texts, a translation feature to read foreign texts, and a Review function through Goodreads. The Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen was released on October 16th, 2024. It had multiple versions, available with or without ads, and a ‘Signature Edition’ with a larger storage capacity.
All models are available in black, raspberry, and jade body colors, and have official case options for each.
Identification:
To identify the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen (2024), check for its 7-inch display, which is larger than the 6-inch screen found on previous Paperwhite models. It has thin bezels and features an adjustable warm light, a feature not available in older versions like the 10th Gen (2018). The charging port is USB-C, whereas earlier models use Micro-USB. It also has a flush-front design and an IPX8 waterproof rating.
To confirm the exact model, go to Settings>Device Info, where it is labeled as Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) in Amazon’s software updates. If the device is unresponsive, the model number SA568B can be found on the back of your device.
