MacBook Pro 2019 (a1990) Never turned on

My friend gave me a macbook pro that she bought pre-pandemic, its been sitting in its box never used. When she got it - it never turned on. She never did anything about it. Just left it on the shelf. So she gave it to me, because I mentioned once I like to tear down laptops. So I've tried all the things suggested here short of taking it apart. So, do you think I should open it up and see if the battery is faulty or not connected correctly? Did this units have an issue from the factory? I also have no idea why she didn't just take it back to apple.

Thanks!

Do you have access to a USB-C power meter to place inline with the charger? I would start there.

It sounds like the system wasn’t used much and likely the battery and/or the power logic needs attention.

@timdionne - Yes, that is the needed tool. Once you get it plug it in and not the voltage it should see it step between two voltages.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

It shows 5.14v 0.07a (plus minus 0.01) and 0.35w on all 4 usb c ports.

@timdionne - Seeing 5 volts and not jumping to ~20 Volts and ~1 Amp within a minute or two, aims us to a failed CD3215C00Z chip with is a common issue on these. Sometime a reflow will fix things. But it might not! There are four of these suckers! I always do the CPU side one first, as more often a liquid spill will collect around it unlike the others.

Here's a great vid from Louis Rossmann on whats needed Diagnosing USB-C muxing issues that prevent Macbook from charging you want to hit the full area as its sometimes the small SMD devices that have a bad connection as well..

Thanks so much! In that video - is he using a heat gun to melt the flux into the board? Do I need that specific kind of flux? Or can I get just any kind from amazon? I'm no expert in this, but I'll try it. He's clearly an expert in this process.

I recently bought VERY cheap a 2018 MacBook Air (A1932) complete in the box, an unused wedding gift that showed no signs of life, it was totally forgotten about until rediscovered and listed as such, it was apparently never used or turned on and wouldn't take any charge or power up. I took the risk, invested in it, replaced the battery, let it fully charge without any disturbance and it worked fine! Obviously the battery had completely discharged over the 5-6 years and also any power for the system clock had also drained as the date and time was at 2021.....
