sits for a few min and then it turns itself off. still has good battery life left and sometimes i have to put it on charger and then it reboots. When it comes back on the batt is fully charged. It will also do this just after a full nights charge.. any suggestions?

It sounds to me like an software issue. Do you have the latest Firmware installed? Or is it jailbroken?

iPhones tend to be picky about batteries. Try installing your old battery and see if it goes away; if it does your phone dosen't like your replacement battery.

If you are still having issues, a recovery restore may help. Refer to this guide to restore the device. This will erase your data, so make sure you have a backup or don't need the data on the phone.
