Dremel 8220 won’t power on
Your Dremel 8220 won’t power on, completely unresponsive.
The battery may not be charged
The Dremel 8220 requires 1 hour of charging time to reach its full capacity. The battery has a relatively short usage time and can lose power during long periods of not being used. Attempt to recharge the battery back, it may take longer than the recommended 1 hour charge time.
The device might not be connected with the battery
The battery has to be properly inserted and the device and must make good contact for the Dremel to work. Ensure both the battery and the contact points of the device are clean. If the battery seems to be in good shape then continue to other possible problems.
The power switch might be broken
This component can break over time with use. This component may require fixing or complete replacement if not functioning properly. If this is your issue, refer to our power switch replacement guide.
The motor might be burnt out
If all of the other components are in working order then you may have a burnt out motor. This will require a motor replacement. If this is your issue, refer to our motor replacement guide.
Failure to charge
Battery pack will not accept a charge from the charger.
The battery pack may not be fully connected to the charger
The battery pack might not be making good contact with the charger. Ensure the contact point are clean on the battery and charger. Make sure battery is fully inserted into charger
The battery pack may be faulty
Try device with a different battery if available, if this fixes device then replace the battery.
My bit can’t be inserted
You attempted to insert an attachment into the collet but it will not accept a bit.
Collet or collet nut may be too tight
The collet inside of the collet nut can get worn out with heavy use. The collet can also be corroded or it could be very dirty, not allowing it to open enough to accept a bit. If you suspect the collet nut is on too tight, try punching out the collet from the collet nut. Once removed, make sure the collect is in good working condition. If this is your issue, refer to our collet replacement guide
The gear lock button might be broken
The shaft lock button will not lock, therefore, you are unable to change the tightness of the collet nut, the spring in lock button could be dislodged or broken. If the button will not return when you release it, the spring is most likely dislodged or broken in this case as well. if this is your issue, refer to our gear lock button replacement guide
The Dremel won’t work at high speeds
The Dremel will only work at low speeds. The device is unresponsive to changes in the speed selector switch.
Faulty wiring in speed selector switch
If the device will turn on and it is working, but the speed cannot be changed, the speed selector switch may be broken. Check to see if the wiring of the speed selector seems to be correct.
Motor could be damaged
If the speed selector switch is okay the issue may be the motor. Consider replacing the motor if other easier solutions do not solve your device’s issues. If this is your issue, refer to our motor replacement guide.
Device could be dirty
Dust and debris can build up inside of the Dremel affecting the performance of the internal parts. Over time, this can put stress on the motor and cause it to break down. If the device seems to be dirty internally, remove as much debris as possible and see if issues persist.
Battery almost dead
If the speed selector switch and motor seem to be in working order your battery may be the issue. Give the battery a full charge and see if the problem is fixed.

I’ve owned two of these and both quit working simultaneously. The first one died in about a month because it couldn’t charge and the other one just quit working and can’t be turned on or charged though the light is permanently on, I wouldn’t have bought another one if I knew it would basically turn into a nightlight until the battery runs out in about a year.

Brand new 8220 shuts off after about 3 seconds. Even though battery indicates full charge.

I’m having the same issue where my Brand new 8220 shuts off at a couple seconds. Battery shows a complete charge.

Follow the directions I posted below, it worked for me I had the same issues

Directions below should solve the issue... Hopefully. That is if you haven't already thrown the unit at the wall in frustration. I know I almost did.

Yup, same problem. Have used air to blow out dust. Battery indicator shows 3 lights then flashes and it quits. Virtually a brand new unit.

Remove the battery and you'll see three battery pins that connect the battery to the unit and charger. You'll need a decently strong pick or small flat head screwdriver and just slightly bend the pins outward so they make better contact to the unit. Don't apply too much pressure you just want to SLIGHTLY bend the pins outward about or less than a 1/16". Just enough so the pins make a connection, or in my case a better connection to the unit. This worked for mine and now it works near flawless. I thought it was broken but this sved my issue. Hopefully this is the case with others and hope this helps. Good luck☻️

When using the mini circular saw attachment, there is a loud vibrating sound. Then on the collet keeper, there are signs of friction with the unit. I pulled the motor and the small holes near the base of the shat had very small metal particles that appear to have been pushed out of this inside by centrifugal force. No play in the shaft that I could tell but at 25k rpm who knows. I bought it factory reconditioned.

For anyone having run time issues and or unit not turning on after a full charge with the dremel 8220 cordless rotary tool here's what i did to fix the issue:

I tried the Tyler D's solution, after searching a few places how to fix that. (My Dremel 8220 randomly shutdown while I working with it).
Seems like the rpm are more estable now and sounds fine (previolusly it also has a irregular speed sometimes).
I'll come back if the issues still there. If not, means everythings is allright.

The same problem, I bought Dremel 8220 in August 22, 2022 and it shuts off less than a minute working. At the charger the indicator shows that the batterie is totally charged, but when plug to the Dremel 8220 it shows only one green lamp (30% or less is charged) you can plug again to the charger - when the green light is stoped blinking, I plugged to the Dremel 8220 and it again shows only 30% of the accumulator capacities is charged. I do this procedure many times but the same again and again only one green light and only e few seconds is working.

I just got mine. Charged battery put it in and have 3 green lights switch it on and nothing happened. Left it on and after a few minutes it started. I used it for about 5 minutes and shut it off. Next day I tried it and again not spinning. I think I will exchange it, but not sure if I should bother. Maybe I should buy a different brand?

Mine has more than 10 years, has seen few hours of work. It is still working but lately especially al low rpm when you move it in different angles it feels something moving inside, maybe the whole motor, you can actually feel it rubs and you can hear, feel the speed changing… what may be the part that needs to be replaced? Thanks.
