Battery Issues
The battery dies within a short amount of time or does not charge while plugged in.
Power Draw
If you are having any type of battery issues, make sure to monitor your app usage. If you have too many apps running in the background, it can deplete your battery life more quickly. Try closing out of any programs or apps that you are not currently working on.
Alternatively, you can change the power settings for your laptop. Click on the Windows icon in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, or press the Windows button on your keyboard. Type in “Power and Sleep Settings” and click on the prompt. Once in the settings window, click on “Additional Power Settings” under the “Related Settings” tab on the right-hand side of the window. Once here, you can change your power plan to the recommended power plan.
Another solution is to enable battery saver mode or to lower your brightness. This can be accessed by clicking on the battery icon on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. This quick menu will allow you to enable battery saver mode and adjust your screen brightness. If you would like to change more settings, click on the prompt that says “Battery Settings”. This window will allow you to change the percentage at which battery saver mode becomes active and change your brightness. There is also some useful information you can refer to in this window. Clicking on the “See which apps are affecting your battery life” below your battery percentage indicator will give you information on what apps are causing your battery to drain faster than normal. Additionally, on the very bottom of the page, you can find a prompt called “Battery Saving Tips”. Clicking on this will bring you to a window that will give you some more information on things you can do to maximize your battery life.
Faulty Battery
If you have had your laptop for a long time without replacing the battery and the battery dies within a short period, or the battery indicator on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen indicates that your battery is plugged in but not charging, you may have a faulty battery. The best thing to do for a faulty battery is to replace it. You can find our guide to replace your battery ''here''.
Malfunctioning Keyboard or Trackpad
The keyboard is not typing properly or the keys feel sticky. Your trackpad is slow or your clicks are not registering on screen.
Keyboard Drivers
There may be many issues as to why your keyboard is not working. First, examine your keyboard to make sure that it is not physically damaged. If you do not see any visible damage to your keyboard, next, check to see if the keyboard driver is properly connected. To access your keyboard driver, right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Next, select the “Device Manager” tab. Click on the “Keyboards” category to expand it. Then right-click on the keyboard option that you want to repair. Select “Uninstall” for that option. After this, go to the Windows key located on the taskbar and select the “Power” button. Click “Restart” on the Power button icon and let the computer fully restart itself. Windows will reinstall the keyboard driver automatically.
Sometimes, the keyboard driver is outdated or fully corrupted. In this instance, you must update your keyboard driver. To do this, first, right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Next, select “Device Manager”. Click on the “Keyboards” category to expand it. Then, right-click on the keyboard option that you would like to update. Select “Update Driver Software”. A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for drivers?” Select “Search automatically for updated driver software.” Windows will search for the latest driver software for your laptop. Restart your computer to complete the process.
Debris Under Keys
There may be debris stuck underneath your keyboard without you noticing. If you are not sure if there is debris beneath your keyboard, take a moment to examine your device. If you see crumbs or other miscellaneous particles underneath your keys, then you need to clean your device! A common way to do this is to use an air duster, which you can buy from any major department store. In using the air duster, you first want to hold the nozzle head at least three inches away from your keyboard. Then, carefully spray the pressurized air between each key, removing dust and debris as you go. Your keys should have a new spring in their step after completing this process.
Malfunctioning Trackpad
If your trackpad is slow or does not register any clicks, you may have a missing or out-of-date driver. It is recommended to have an external mouse plugged in to complete this troubleshooting process. To fix trackpad issues, first try updating the driver. Right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Select “Device Manager”. Click on the “Mice and other pointing devices” tab to expand it. Right-click on the trackpad that you would like to update. Select “Update Driver”. A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for drivers?” Select “Search automatically for updated driver software.” Windows will search automatically for the latest driver software. Restart your computer to complete the process.
If updating your driver does not work, you may have to uninstall the driver. To do this, first right-click on the Windows key and select “Device Manager”. Click on the “Mice and other pointing devices” tab to expand it. Right-click on the trackpad that you would like to uninstall. Select “Uninstall Driver”. Restart your computer to complete the process. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
If updating the driver or uninstalling the driver does not work, you may have to use the generic driver that comes with the Windows software. To do this, go to “Device Manager” and select the “Mice and other pointing devices” tab to expand it. Right-click on the trackpad that you would like to change. Select “Update driver”. A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for drivers?” Select the “Browse my computer for driver software” option. Then select “Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer”. Select “HID-compliant mouse” and then click “Next”. A list of prompts will follow instructing you on how to install it.
If none of the above steps work, you may have to replace your trackpad. To do this, please follow ''this guide''.
Laptop Cannot Connect to the Internet
The laptop is having issues connecting to the internet through Wi-Fi.
Computer Settings
If you are experiencing issues with your laptop connecting to Wi-Fi, it is possible that your Wi-Fi adapter is not ‘on’. To check and see whether or not your adapter is ‘on’ or ‘off’, first go to the Windows key located on the taskbar. Select the “Settings” button (it looks like a gear). Then select the “Network and Internet” option. Click on the “Wi-Fi” tab and make sure that the toggle is pushed towards ‘on’.
Wi-Fi Drivers
If your adapter is on but still is not working, you may need to install new drivers. The easiest way to check your drivers is to go directly to Asus’ website and navigate to the support section for your specific model. There, you will be able to find the most current drivers for your specific device.
Wi-Fi Adapter
If the issue does not seem to be software related, it is always possible that there is a problem with the physical Wi-Fi adapter in the computer itself. Although less common than software issues, the adapter could go bad or may need to be changed to support new Wi-Fi standards in the future. Luckily, replacing the adapter is fairly straightforward, and can be done by just about anyone. To replace your ZenBook’s Wi-Fi adapter, refer to this guide.
Distorted Audio
The audio through the laptop sounds distorted or is not playing.
Audio Output
You may have the wrong audio output selected in your settings. To check, go to the start menu, open settings, navigate to the “Sound” menu and click “Sound Control Panel”. Here, you can select which output your computer is using.
Audio Drivers
Everyone knows how frustrating it is to listen to their favorite song with terrible audio. If you are experiencing audio issues, it is possible that your audio driver needs to be updated or replaced. To update your audio driver, first, right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Next, select '“Device Manager”. Then select the “Sound, video and game controllers” option to expand it. Right-click on the sound device that you want to update and click “Update driver”. A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for drivers?” Select the “Search automatically for updated driver software” option. Windows will automatically search for the latest driver software for your device. Restart your computer to complete the process.
If updating your driver does not work, it is possible that you need to replace the entire driver. To do this, first right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Select “Device Manager”. Click on the “Sound, video and game controllers” option to expand it. Right-click on the sound device that you would like to replace and select “Uninstall”. Then select “Delete driver software”. After the uninstallation is complete, restart your device. Windows will try to reinstall the driver.
If updating your driver does not work, and replacing the driver also does not work, you might have to use the generic audio driver that comes with Windows 10. To do this, right-click on the Windows key located on the taskbar. Select “Device Manager” and go to the “Sound, video and game controllers” option to expand it. Right-click on your audio driver of choice and select “Update driver”. A new window will appear asking “How do you want to search for drivers?” Select the “Browse my computer for driver software” option and then click on the “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer” option. Then select the “High Definition Audio Device” option and click next. A list of prompts will appear instructing you on how to install the new driver.
Slow Response Time
The laptop is slow when trying to browse the web, access files, run programs, or use of day-to-day tasks.
Computer Usage
If your computer has too many apps running at once, this can lead to poor performance, low battery life, and slow response time. Closing apps that you do not need at the moment will be beneficial for battery life and performance.
Insufficient Memory
If your ZenBook slows down when doing memory intensive tasks, like using Google Chrome, it may be beneficial to upgrade your RAM. To verify that your RAM is the problem, open task manager by pressing control+Shift+Escape and then click “More Details” at the bottom. After that, click “performance” and then “Memory” to check to see how much RAM your computer is utilizing. This window should also tell you how many GB of RAM is installed in your device. You can find the recommended amount of RAM for the apps that you are running by running a quick Google search.
CPU Overheating
Your CPU could be thermal throttling (slowing down the processor to control heat) because of a blockage. First, make sure the vents around the bottom of the laptop are clear, and then check to make sure the vents are not clogged by dust. Also, ensure the laptop is not being set on something like a blanket, that could potentially block any of the vents. Check to see that the fan is spinning by placing your hand 3-4 inches away from the computer exhaust. If you feel hot air coming out, the fan should be working. If the fan is not working, or is not cooling the computer sufficiently, you may need to replace the fan or thoroughly clean the fan by taking it out of the device. You can follow our guide on how to remove and replace the CPU fan here.
Slow File Explorer
If your laptop runs very slow while browsing your file explorer and moving files around, you may need to upgrade your storage device. There are many new storage devices that are out on the market today. Most traditional storage devices are HDD’s or a Hard Disk Drive. These types of drives are the slowest. The next type of storage device is an SSD or a Solid State Drive. These drives have become a more common occurrence in certain computers. The last type of drive, the M.2 drive is not only the fastest type of storage, it is the most discreet. The M.2 drive slots in directly into your motherboard. Please keep in mind that M.2 drives are uncommon in laptops. Also, if you would like to upgrade your storage device, you may need to transfer your old data over to your new storage device if you wish to keep it. To replace your storage device, please follow this link.
