Background
The iPhone 17 Pro was announced on September 9th, 2025 alongside the iPhone Air, 17, and 17 Pro Max. It features a complete redesign compared to the 16 Pro, with a large aluminum unibody coupled with a small "Ceramic Shield" glass pane underneath the enlarged camera "plateau." Similar to the last two generations, it has an Action button at the top right edge and the Camera Control button near its bottom right corner. There's also an improved Ceramic Shield 2 glass on the screen that's more scratch-resistant.
Notably, the thermal system has been redesigned to have a vapor chamber to move heat from the new A19 Pro Chip into the aluminum unibody. The screen size remains the same as the previous generation at 6.3 inches, but the 17 Pro has better outdoor brightness and anti-reflection. The front camera has improved to be 18MP with a new "Center Stage" design for taking selfies. The rear cameras have all been upgraded to 48 MP Fusion. The optical-quality zoom now supports up to 8x (compared to the 16 Pro's 5x).
It's available in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, and Silver and starts at $1,199 in the United States.
Identification
You can identify the iPhone 17 Pro by the model number printed inside of the USB-C charge port.
You can also find the model number through the phone's UI by going to the Settings app and navigating to General > About. Tap on the number listed in the Model Number section and it should change to a format that looks like the numbers above.
Additionally, Apple offers a quick online tool to help identify your devices: Identify your iPhone model.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a 6.3-inch (diagonal) flat glass screen, thin black bezels, a pill-shaped, black "dynamic island" at the top of the screen, matte back glass with a glossy Apple logo, and aluminum side rails. It's camera "plateau" also reaches across the top left and top right edges of the backside of the phone. The 17 Pro has a small cutout for the Ceramic Shield glass pane underneath the rear cameras.
Volume controls and the Action Button can be found on the left edge, while the power button and Camera Control button are situated on the right. A rectangular camera "plateau" containing three cameras protrudes from the backside. This model has no home button.
The iPhone 17 Pro can be differentiated from the iPhone 17 Pro Max by its smaller screen (relative to the 6.9-inch screen on the Pro model).
The iPhone 17 Pro can be differentiated from the previous generation iPhone 16 Pro by its much larger camera plateau and aluminum unibody with a small Ceramic Shield glass pane in place of an entirely glass back cover.
