Background
The JBL Xtreme 4 is JBL’s forth iteration on their Xtreme portable speaker series. As a portable Bluetooth speaker, the JBL Xtreme 4 is marketed as being great for playing music at hangouts or taking your music out loud on the go. Released Globally in February 2024, the JBL Xtreme 4 is the current newest addition to the Xtreme series.
The JBL Xtreme 4 touts several improvements on the Xtreme 3 such as its new AI sound boost, increased volume, increased battery life, and replaceable battery. Other features include waterproofing and dustproofing, a shoulder strap, built-in powerbank, and multi-speaker connection with Auracast™.
In the year since its release, there have been no critical design failures or manufacturer recalls. The IP67 rating means that the Xtreme 4 is dustproof and is waterproof to a certain extent. It can withstand rain, and it can be submerged a meter deep for around 30 minutes. If submerged in pool or salt water, it is recommended to wash off the device with tap water because the salt or pool chemicals can damage the seals on the device after long exposure. JBL also sells replacement batteries on their website, further increasing the device's lifespan since the battery is usually the first part to fail. Overall, in terms of durability the JBL Xtreme 4 has performed well.
Customer reviews generally praise the JBL Xtreme 4 for its sound quality, but there are concerns about the pricing being too high. As of March 2025, JBL sells the Xtreme 4 at $379.95. At this price, owners of the Xtreme 3 are skeptical if the upgrade justifies the price. However, if you’re picking between the Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 4, the general sentiment among reviewers is that the Xtreme 4 is more worth it. This article by Soumya Roy provides a much more in-depth comparison between the Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 4.
