Updated version of the 2016 Retina MacBook. Model A1534, EMC 3099. Now features faster Kaby Lake processors up to 1.4 GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz and up to 50 percent faster SSD, and supports up to twice the memory.

Can this motherboard be repaired?

When attaching the trackpad/keyboard controller, the logic board was getting power, and a component next to this ribbon connector burned out with white smoke. Now the unit does not power on.

  1. Is this repairable or worth trying?
  2. Will replacing the logic board fix the problem? That's all I can see that was burned out. I was replacing the trackpad, which seems to be ok.

Thanks

James

Apple has produced quite a few Mac systems! Without knowing which one it's impossible to answer your question. We still need to see what burnt both a tight image of the area as well as a wider image to narrow down the first image.

All we can tell is you have a laptop from what you've stated here. Review the laptop listings to narrow down what you have EveryMac

Apologies and thanks for your reply. It is a MacBook 12" 2017 A1534 EMC3099 - 8gb/256gb/m3 1.1ghz

@unclemuscles post some pictures of your logic board and point out which component "was burned out". we can then try to identify the component and narrow down what circuitry it belongs to.

If you have never soldered on a circuit board this maybe a bit of a chore, but we can at least try to assist you with getting an idea of what you are up against.

@oldturkey03 @Dan thanks so much for your replies!!

Sorry, I forgot to attach my image before. I have now posted a couple. It is the green component in the zoomed in version.

I'm actually trying to learn more electronics. I'm a web developer with a raspberry pi, a Pinecil (with fine point tips) and a bunch of accessories from AliExpress so I will use as a project.

Maybe it's best to get a broken board and use it for repair?

It actually booted today and I'm afraid to plug in the keyboard/trackpad ribbon and there's probably no reason to try right? But it's a good sign I think that it can be repaired.

A lot of people loved the smaller size but it's a bear to repair! So I do think replacing the logic board would be the easier solution but likely more expensive depending on what was damaged. Here's the iFixit guide to replace it and the part as well Retina MacBook 2017 Logic Board Replacement

Repairing the logic board is possible but does take a bit of skill as this is by far the densest board ever created by Apple as such hard to soldier without disturbing other components.
