The 2013 revamp of the desktop Mac series known as the Mac Pro.

Mac Pro 6,1 is constantly restarting

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a used 2013 Mac Pro as I've always wanted one, but have since run into some issues. I'm running on the latest version of Monterey, have the 12-Core CPU (original), and it's been upgraded to a 512GB NVME with adapter, along with 64GB of Crucial RAM.

During light to normal use (I'm not what you'd describe as a "Pro" user - the heaviest task i'll do in any given day is editing RAW images in Lightroom) - The computer is just constantly restarting and rebooting to a message saying that it restarted due to an error (shared at the bottom of my post)

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • SMC reset
  • PRAM reset
  • Erased and clean-installed macOS Monterey
  • Swapped in an original Apple SSD from a Macbook Pro 2015
  • Brought it to an Apple Store (in Paris), where a RAM-related issue was suspected but no further diagnostic given.
  • Tried multiple RAM combinations in different slots
  • Installed new RAM from OWC
  • Ran extended memory tests overnight (no issues reported)
  • Used EtreCheck (no major flags)
  • Ran CPU stress tests (Endurance, Cinebench, Heaven, etc. – all completed without crashing)
  • Reapplied thermal paste and thoroughly cleaned the machine internally.....

Here is the error report - I've ordered a new CPU and will install it once it arrives as my research as shown that this is the culprit but has anyone else had this same situation and fixed it?

Thank you!!!

I think you'll find the issue is your Blade SSD alternative you are using. I've replaced a few M.2 SSD's with the adapter going to an Apple pin compatible replacement SSD from OWC or other source. The issue is timing the system don't have a sizable window and as you are adding an adapter they tend to increase the time delay.

Thanks! I'll try the 256gb 2015 MacBook Pro SSD again but I was running into the same issues last time I swapped it in... It fits without an adapter and is a proprietary Mac SSD so that should solve the issue if that's indeed the problem right? Do you think it would be worthwhile to try to find an original Mac Pro SSD (not from a MacBook?) - In any case thanks for your insights. At the very least I'll buy a new adapter as they're inexpensive.

@trevorpatterson - Some of the Apple SSD's won't work well in your system. Here's a good writeup on the different flavors The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs. They also sell the custom SSD's. Just keep in mind these SSD's aren't being made by Samsung anymore. OWC is the only other source.

FYI - I still have my Trash Can MacPro and still use it processing images.

Ok that's great advice! I will see how the new CPU does in a few days when it arrives and whether the error continues - Glad to hear yours is still going strong! Based on the link you shared, it seems I shouldn't have any issues with the proprietary drive that is in my 2015 15" MacBook Pro but the trouble shooting continues :)
