Screen partially tintend and "frozen"

Hello Community!

My Macbook Air M1 has the following issue.
A month ago partly my screen on the left side started to be a bit darker. At the beginning it was only slightly and barely noticable but in the last month it became more severe. It is now in a state that texts are barely readable in that section of the screen, as it also looks like that the displayed texts and pictures also get frozen.

My question to you guys is, do you know what the cause for this issue is?
The laptop was the whole time on my desk and I didn't take it anywehere when this issue appeared for the first time.

My second question is, is there a way to fix that screen or is it necessary to replace it completely?

Here is a picture of the screen:

Mmm… it would be smart making sure the issue is the display (most likely) if you have an external display which you can connect to your system as well as a keyboard and mouse so you can test the system in Clamshell mode as you need the screens lid down for the external to become the Primary.

If that’s not possible, you could try accessing your system from a second machine system via Target Disk Mode, that wont test the graphics but should at least validate the rest of the system is OK.

As to your issue this does look like a damaged screen often caused by a good bang, something heavy sitting on the lid. Make sure you don’t have anything sitting between the keyboard and lid a paperclip or a camera cover as that can ALSO stress the display causing the LCD panel to encounter micro fractures which sever the metal oxide traces that move the signals across the LCD panel. And lastly a liquid spill in just the wrong place.

Hello Dan!

thank you very much for this detailed response.

When I connect an external screen it works perfectly.

Now that you mentioned that spillage could be an issue.

I spilled a little bit of water weeks before this issue happened.

Maybe this is the cause and it just took some time.

Thank you for your help,

Lukas
