MacBook Air M1 2020 Display not working

Stupidly, I left my MacBook Air on the ledge and the water that condensed on my window overnight dribbled down and managed to get into the top part of the device. I have given it a wipe and it turned on completely fine. After about an hour of usage, the screen started to jitter. Not thinking, I connected the MacBook with a cable, this is where the display started messing up completely. After this, I was not able to turn the display on at all.

I therefore had taken the cover off. Upon doing so I noticed there were small bits of water in the top part of the device, the spongy bits in the corner also had water in them but nothing drastic.

I dried it out, but, the screen still doesn’t turn on.The MacBook itself turns on and I can connect it to another display monitor which works fine. However the screen on its own doesn’t seem to work at all. Any tips, ideas how I could fix this or what to use check myself before taking it to a repair specialist?

Sadly you have water damage. How badly is now the question. I’m assuming the display is damaged and will need to be replaced but the damage could be a bit deeper effecting the logic board.

To be clear it’s not the H2O it’s what’s dissolved within it! Here it’s salts and other stuff which is the true cause of the damage. The water is likely mostly dried by now, but the stuff which was in it is now sitting on the logic board and over time will corrode things and as the stuff is also conductive (Vs distilled water) it could have shorted out some of the components.

So you do need to clean the logic board at least where you noted it was wet. You’ll need 90% isopropyl alcohol with cotton swabs to clean the areas. I find a loadable spray can (loaded IPA) with a snorkel tube can be more effective but the logic board needs to come out to do that and this also addresses the other side which you didn’t see. You still want to keep the spraying away from the metal covered areas unless to take the covers off. Giving the board enough time to fully dry before putting back. You might spy some damage which needs to be repaired then after that see if the internal is working. Then I would order a replacement display assembly.

Here’s one source for a used display MacBook Air 13" Late 2020, M1Display Assembly Sadly, Apple prevents access to the calibration tool so the camera will work, but TrueTone won’t.

Also be careful! A back of the truck display won't have the firmware loaded so the camera won’t work. A used display has the firmware present.

Or, get the part directly from Apple here Apple Self Repair Store which also gets TrueTone working as you’ll have access to the paywalled site. For many the TrueTone is not that important. As Apple sets pricing differently by region you’ll need to grab the needed P/N from the first site and then place the order to discover your costs.
