Announced on October 13th, 2020, the iPhone 12 mini is a smaller version of Apple's iPhone 12. It features a 5.4-inch OLED display, an A14 Bionic processor, and dual rear cameras.

Apple Pay not working properly after housing replacement

So. I am having the strangest problem and can’t seem to find the solution. My gf dropped her iPhone 12 Mini and I had to replace the entire back housing. Now when she puts her phone to any payment terminal it will only work when she has no cover on it. We have tried several different covers and it only works with no cover on. Any suggestions to which this can be caused?

Update (12/15/24)

I just realized that her phone can pay at some terminals even with cover on, while won’t pay at others with the cover on.

The case holds the NFC antenna double check the case connection point (threaded stud) make sure the plastic is not blocking the antenna bar connection.

The reason some payment pads are working and others not (or without the case) gets into there sensitivity. You see even without the antenna the bar offers a bit of signal but the signal is weak! So you need to hold the phone closer as well as less material to pass through.

You may need to get a replacement case as this one might be bad.

Here’s the image from the iPhone 12 mini Teardown

The top right bar/cable unit is what I suspect is the connection.

Where is the antenna located tho? And what points do I have to check? Sorry, but I am so confused. The sensibility makes sense tho and that’s what I was thinking myself, but how and where I make it stronger?

If you mean the flex cable next to the camera in the upper right corner next to the camera I have checked it and it seems fine and without any breaks, could it need a replacement anyway?

@michael90895 - Apple loves to hide things! I haven’t fixed this iPhone so just looking at the Teardown I do believe the isolated corner is doing duel use here both for Bluetooth as well as NFC in the standard iPhone and Pro the antenna is within the lens bump out but here I don’t see the needed isolated pathway needed to get to the open side of the shielding. I’ve added an image of the antenna connections from the Teardown to my answer above.
