Remove Apple logo from the rear? Case Mod!

I’ve gutted my iMac to use as a display and I’m looking to remove the Apple logo on the back to create access for a fan.

Has anyone removed the silver antenna circle from the inside and knows if the Apple on the back can be popped out/removed?

Here’s a photo of where the driver board will be positioned. There is no ventilation at the top the Mac, so removing the antenna cover and the logo would create an exit for the hot air which is directly behind chip.

ANSWERED!

I used a heat gun (hairdryer) for 1 minute and the metal shield came off pretty easily.

Another 1 minute heat application and it begrudgingly gave up an edge on the thick black logo plate.

@se3060775 great job! now, any chance you can cut the part right after "Update (12/10/24)

You shouldn’t need a fan if you are just converting the systems into a display. The natural drafting (like a chimney) is already present with the gaps at the bottom and at the top as the heat will rise up and out.

If you remove the Bluetooth antenna and Apple Logo you will offer a short path for the air to travel from the RAM cover with or without a fan so the rest of the case won’t gain enough cooling.

A good way to see this is in your kitchen sink with water.

Take a flat cookie sheet and place it at a sharp angle down from the slightly open faucet the angle will effect the waters width of spread so as the angle gets shallower the spread is more!

Air flow is really no different. But, clearly the slow flow of the faucet can be equated to the volume of heat so if the system was really running hard then a fan would be required (hence why your system had one) but as you pulled most of the heat sources out the need of a fan is really not needed here. Just like how a harder running stream from the faucet would need a bigger drain.

Thank you for your reply. This is a 4K, so there is no RAM cover. In my use case, the driver board with the controller chip is positioned above the built in vent, so there is no exit for the hot air.

Removing the WiFi antenna cover and apple logo would create the chimney effect you describe.

@se3060775 - it’s the vent area where the RAM cover is located which was I speaking about. Still there on the newer models.

I think you are over focused on cooling here. How about getting a temp probe you can place inside to measure things a IR camera won’t help much as the metal will block what you want to see.

If needed create some vents along the top edge even a fan churning the air inside or sucking cool air in from the bottom vents

I need to work on purchasing a good temp camera and probe setup! I ran the card in the open for a hour or more and it was HOT.

My first thought was just drill some holes in the top of the back case. Even with good measuring, I don't feel an array of holes would be perfect enough to not disappoint the aesthetic.

By removing the logo I can put in a black grill and it would still be cleaner IMO

@se3060775 - while that would look better it won’t be very effective as the inflow and outflows are very close to each other.

I would wait until you get the thermal probe to measure the internal temp. A thermal camera won’t help that much as the metal plate of the display or the back shell won’t let you see at the better detail. Placing the sensor along the top edge inside as well as the mid and lower points tracking the heat build up and the max. Plot it out in a graph based on a fix time when you note the value.

@danj it’s an easy task to cover the original exhaust vent from the inside. That will create quite a distance from the intake on the bottom to the exhaust out the rear Apple Logo.

I just haven’t found any resource depicting its removal!
