The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

Replacement battery age requested before purchase

Hello,

Can I find out the manufacturer date for an iFixit replacement battery before purchase?

Background: I recently had a shop replace my original Macbook Pro 12.1 battery (13 inch early 2015). The aftermarket (Simplo brand) battery is hotter than a Texas bbq, and after only 16 cycles it's already dropped to 94% capacity. I have installed a fan controller app to turn the fans to full blast, which helps with the heat but destroys the battery time between charging. Today I installed CoconutBattery and saw that the manufacturing date of the battery is March 2015. When it was installed it had about 20% charge, which I thought was low, but I didn't think too much about it.

This is the repair forum, and I'm afraid the iFixit Store personnel don't hang out here watching for questions. You'd be far better off contacting them directly with your question. Best way I know of is to email them at support@ifixit.com.

Coconut Batter is NOT always accurate with battery dates.

Coconut Battery app discovers a gem ;);)

I recently put a new battery in a MB Air 2018 and the date was 2015!

Had numerous circumstances with these incorrect dates.

@livfe - Well… that’s not correct. The report of what the batteries microcontroller reports is the data of the microcontroller. If the microcontroller is reused then you will get the original date programmed. This is not CoconutBattery error.

@danj How is the microcontroller reused? They salvaged from old discarded batteries or NOS new old stock would be more likely.

@livfe - During COVID the battery makers couldn’t get the part so it was a way of survival for there business big or small! They grabbed what they could. Some I didn’t have the tools or skills to burn the chips firmware and/or program the non-volatile storage area these chips (ROM) have hence bad date. That’s assuming they got access to the virgin chips.

It doesn’t matter in the end SMC polls the chip and you get what it holds, in our case CoconutBattery is just allowing you to see it.
