The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

MacBook 2015 not recognizing battery

Hey! I booted my parents' old 2015 13-inch Pro and realized the battery was stuck at 1% and wouldn’t charge. It had 283 cycles and normal health. After an SMC reset, the battery icon briefly showed an X and then disappeared from the menu bar and system preferences. Now, it only boots with the MagSafe (red light) and shuts down if I unplug it.

Here’s what I tried:

  • SMC reset
  • Reconnecting the battery on the motherboard
  • Charging overnight
  • Checking if I could enable the battery icon on system preferences via the personalize menu

One think kinda worked: I've read on reddit something called SMC "bypass" (holding the power button for 5 extra seconds during an SMC reset). It boots with fans at max and works on battery, but there is still no battery in the UI (system preferences, menu bar).

Do you have any ideas before I consider replacing the battery? It’s running Monterey. Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for answering!

But like I said, it doesn't recognize the battery at all. It behaves like it is disconnected even if I go to the SMC bypass mode and it works with the battery/without the magsafe plugged in.

Let’s yes a better tool so we can see things more clearly, install this Gem of an App CoconutBattery, post a snapshot of the Apps main window here so we can see in a new answer. Make sure the charger is plugged in and click on the battery button so we can see it as well.

Update (09/01/24)

@alexandrehsf - The CoconutBattery snapshot tells us a lot!

First off we can see the batteries microcontroller is not working or unable to communicate with the SMC system within the main logic board. Note the error NaN and none of the voltage and other values are valid. Yet SMC is reporting the charger is connected but not applying power to the battery.

So I think it’s clear the battery is shot given the cycle count you reported.
