The Nintendo 3DS XL 2015, marketed as the New Nintendo 3DS XL, was released October 11, 2014 in Japan and February 13, 2015 in North America.

New Nintendo 3DS XL screen stays black when powered on

Hello, I recently purchased a broken New Nintendo 3DS XL for repair. The listing stated that the console powered on, but nothing was shown on the screen.

When I received the console in the mail and tested it, I figured it was related to the LCD screen connections or was bricked (both issues I have fixed before) but it doesn't seem to be the case here.

The way my issue seems to be different from others is that nothing on the console works at all when the power is on. There is no sound and no wifi yellow light.

I have already tried the following as its been suggested online:

  • Held power button for 15 seconds without the battery in
  • Blew on game card port
  • Removed Wifi card briefly then put it back
  • Verified and gently cleaned LCD screen connections
  • Attempted to boot into Safe mode (unsuccessful)
  • Removed SD Card
  • Powered console on, removed battery while it was on, put battery back in and power on again (unsuccessful)
  • Changed out battery with a tested functional one (unsuccessful, battery that was in the unit was also tested on another console with success)
  • Held power and home buttons at the same time
  • Verified that the SD card had NO CFW on it. (Unknown if that SD card originally came with the console)

My next test was going to be verifying if the LCD screens are bad but I didn't think that would cause the sound to be bad? I also don't have another New 3DS XL at the moment. I have worked with numerous 2DS and 3DS XL but this is my first NEW 3DS XL. I was hoping it would be similar but it seems to be vastly different.

What else can I try? What else might be causing these issues?

Hi!

This can be caused by multiple components. I know that if the WiFi card has gone bad, you will also get this.

I would try to replace the WiFi card first and see if that solves it. If not, return it and get a refund. Then you do need to check the motherboard and see if that one is OK or not.

Please let us know how it goes, hopefully a new WiFi card will solve it!

Hey there, thanks for the response. Is there a way I can test the components you're talking about? I have a multimeter if that would help. I would like to try to see if I can identify exactly what it is first for my own learning.

I will look into a replacement wifi card as well. They require soldering, don't they?

Hi!

Unfortunately it does require soldering for this one :(. I would try a other powerboard first and see if this solves it (I don’t think it will, but worth a try). Then I would try another WiFi card, if this failed as well, it’s probably a SMD component on the motherboard. It’s not a fuse, otherwise the blue light won’t come up. Replacing the motherboard is easy and they are for sale out there, but more expensive…

No, not unfortunate, actually! I know how to do it and it won't be an issue! Just confirming that the Wifi card is the component that's soldered to the gamecard reader? As for the powerboard, this is the first and only NEW nintendo 3ds xl that I have. I have almost exclusively worked with 2012 3DS XL and 2013 2DS Models, so I wouldn't have the parts to replace them. I'll attempt to replace the wifi card first before I go to board replacements.

Thanks!

Alright, awesome :)! Here you can find it: Nintendo 3DS XL 2015 Teardown (Step 13 Wifi SOC, orange dot).

My pleasure! Yeah best thing is to do that first. Otherwise you can try the power board. Good luck with the repair!!

Just giving an update since I forgot to earlier... Almost all of the videos I watched on this referred to the connector for the game card reader the "wifi card," so I thought it would be a simple solder job. I am not skilled enough at soldering to solder and desolder chips so I don't think I will be able to repair this on my own. I will take it to a shop soon and see if they are able to fix it up.
