In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

SMC Issue or deeper issues? - How to fix?

So I have this MB Air A1466 2017 that had an issue with an undetected battery, we traced it to 2 blown caps and a funny SMC, We have replaced the caps and the SMC (Correct parts LM4FS1AH) and upon booting up the system was really sluggish and gave only ONE display resolution choice which was not the default (1275xXXX or something.... I thought an SMC / PRAM reset, using another GOOD Battery another 45w charger and even a fresh install (12.7.5) might help correct things but it didn't help. I then ran an apple diagnostics and here is the result (please read carefully)

The tech guy spent ages checking voltages etc and will look again on Monday....Until then maybe someone can shed some light? @oldturkey03. Hilfe!

I stumbled upon this post which lists the same 2 error codes

PFM006 & PPN001 error in diagnostics

So I did a 're-connect everything' but nothing changed....very slow to boot and fan sounds like it is at full speed... Quoting @danj At this point your logic board has a problem with one of the sensors voltage sense lines. Seems likely.

@livfe can you tell us which capactiros have been replaced? That way we can look a little closer into the issue. Possibly a "wrong" SMC or possibly receiving wrong information based on other issues.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@oldturkey03 The SMC was LM4FS1AH , as for the Caps I will ask the tech guy. It is the same unit as from Battery Power OK But Battery Not Dectected......

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe I meant which specific caps. Location on the board or circuitry designator etc. :-) Not sure how well you know your tech guy but I would replace the substitute with the original and then check things out. A replacement has to be from an identical board as yours. You can't substitute since that could cause the issues that you are describing. To verify this, replace the SMC once more, but use yours.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@oldturkey03 Yes I know, I will update you on that once I got the info from the tech guy

@livfe awesome :-)

@oldturkey03 It was a wrong SDA resistor value, now fixed! Thank you!

Where did you source the SMC chip? The one you installed is looking for a 85Watt charger and/or the MagSafe cord connector & cable was replaced so the keying within it is not correct as Diags is telling you’ve connected a 45Watt which is the correct charger for an Air system but it thinks you’ve connected the wrong charger.

Once again you give an answer that is NOT AN ANSWER but rather a question on my question, please stop doing this Dan, kindly leave a comment like oldturkey03. You are always doing this and others then will believe the question has been answered when it hasn't yet.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - This is the answer but you just can’t see it! Answers aren’t always Problem to a solution, often times is debugging the problem! It’s a set of steps to diagnose what’s the failure. So what was the source of the SMC chip as they are programmed! Or your charger is bad (MagSafe cord)

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj As I stated in the question I have used 2 different chargers which are both working fine. The issue appears to be something still wrong with a sensor, we are going to check it further when the business opens again on Monday.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@livfe - You are over focused on the charger its self! The issue is the Silver MagSafe connector at the end of the cord! If the chargers MagSafe cord was replaced then the ID within the connector head is could be the issue.

But, that wasn't the first issue! The first issue was the source of the SMC chip you claimed to have replaced. The 15" MacBook chips uses different firmware which is burn't into the chip. I made the same mistake many years ago!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@danj Yes, The seller is adamant that the chip is the correct model for the unit, they have millions of chips in their stock and know what they are doing, trusted seller ;). I did check one od the chargers and the end tip 'was a little hot' tbh, I haven't as yet tried any other charger but the issues remain even when not connected to a power source, so until next week we have to hold out for a further diagnosis on the info from the apple diagnostics and from comments :) I will update when there is new info
