Lid lock and motor tachometer

I recently broke and replaced the lid lock latch piece for my washer. Plugged it in and got all the way to where it tries to sense the load. It then stays in the sensing part of the cycle for a few minutes only to give me the error code f5e3.

I was able to find a video online with how to go through the diagnostics and I cleared the codes. Then did a factory reset after having no luck with the machine starting. That did not work either.

I then went through the settings and ran the tests for various parts. Water in with both temps, pump draining, ect. I found a section that would give me values of these parts. The lid lock and latch both had a value of 1. Unsure if that is a good number. Then found that the motor tachometer had a value of 0. Is this now the problem and does it relate to the error code? If so, any suggestions?

Hi @erin90362,

What is the make and model number of the washer?

Whirlpool model WTW6120HW0

Just to verify that you're getting the correct error code, pull the washer forward and tilt it back and then look up the inside of the cabinet and check if the tech sheet is there.

It should have W11197708 printed on it somewhere on the bottom of the page.

It details how to run the diagnostics and interpret the codes.

Not all Whirlpool models work the same so unless the video you saw was for your exact model it pays to be sure.

Saves a lot of time.

Also it details what to check for each error code.

Worth a look anyway if you already haven't done so.

@jayeff I dont recall seeing any paper inside the machine. Will have to check, but that number is different than the number found on a manual downloaded from whirlpool. The video was of the exact machine I have though. From what I've been able to find, theres around 8 issues that this code could be caused by. I do appreciate your responses.

When I do run the diagnostics on it, I can make it to the washing part of it before it gives me the error code again. It will run test for filling, and rinsing with no issue.

Also, unsure if you seen what I responded to the other person with, but for some reason the lock icon is no longer on the screen. It will act like it is locked, but no icon.

Googling your code, and guessing it's a Whirlpool, it’s still angry about the switch. 1 would most likely indicate closed or latched with 0 meaning open, like on a switch.

If it’s not too awful, ohm the two switches out and make sure they both read open and closed with the switches in the same position. I.E. if you press the switch, do you get at or near 0 ohms and if you release them do they both read open or high impedance or something like that. You may have a switch that looks and fits the same but it’s designed for it’s operating position to be the opposite of the one your washer came with.

Try unplugging it for awhile, like 5-10 minutes too and check for a CMOS battery, it could retain unwanted settings. I know you said you did a factory reset…. Sometimes electronics don’t behave. There’s a reason tech support always tells you to unplug and plug something back in, electronics can be uncooperative. Barring that: find a local repair person, buy the part from them, and tell them what trouble you’re having. I’m not saying make them feel like their part is defective, you’re essentially paying them for their knowledge. Part of what you pay for is experience with trades people and the part would probably be cheaper than a service call but still engender goodwill.

Thank you for responding. We bought a replacement part from whirlpool using model #, so i can't see it being the wrong part. It was left unplugged a good while before and after I was able to clear the codes, and factory reset. One thing i can add, is that since the new part went in, i no longer get the lock symbol on the machine screen. It does act like it is locked though. Before it would not let me start a cycle, now i can start it, and go no further than sensing the cycle.
