Hi,
I have a late 2016 13” macbook pro (function keys) with a bad logic board. With some research i found that the 2017 version is almost identical with an updated CPU and GPU. A replacement 2016 board fetches a similar price online so I was wondering if I could replace the board with a 2017 version (also with function keys).

Yes! They should be interchangeable.
The board is exactly the same size, the connectors are at the same location, The cables and major parts Battery, Display & SSD are all the same.
Apple sometimes does a model ID change just because of the change out of the CPU as Apple went to a newer version in the 2017
Apple did the same thing between the 2011/12 15” Unibody MacBook Pro.
I can’t think of anything that would stop you. But, I haven’t tried either. Let us know how it goes.

I know I'm nitpicking here, but "Apple did the same thing between the 2011/12 15” Unibody MacBook Pro" is not correct. The 15" versions of 2011 and 2012 are completely different, because 2011 is the old A1286 and 2012 is the first retina A1398.
There is of course the 13" A1278 '11 and '12 that are very similar but unsure if these boards or the same.
Maybe you meant A1398 Mid 2012 and early 2013? These have interchangeable boards, just like the '16/'17 series.

I think you need to reread what was asked and what I wrote
Apple produced a unibody 2012 15” MacBook Pro as well as in the fall the first retina systems. So your comment is flawed
The two Fn key models logic boards are the same physically and I’ve swapped them about with no issues.
Take the time in reviewing the guides to see for your self.
Don’t get lost in the model destination, focus on the model ID number as it’s a better guide on what is transferable between as an example the Fn models are MacBookPro13.1 and MacBookPro14.1 so from the face of it they are not related. Which is similar to the 2011 & 2012 15” MacBook Pro’s - MacBookPro8.2 and MacBookPro9.1 but we have seen the logic board is transferrable between them with just a slight mod with the LVDS cable.
