MacBook Pro won't charge and dead

Hi guys,

One day my macbook pro didn’t charge anymore and from the magsafe port came a high pitch sound. I disconnected immediately. I was not using an original charger for a few years now, my bad, that was probably the reason for my troubles now. I disconnected and made a backup of my files, so the computer itself was still working. As I opened it up I saw that the battery was bloated. I let the battery discharge for safety reasons and ordered a new battery from Ifixit and used the guide to change it. I bought a new magsafe 2 charger from apple. When I was done the macbook pro still didn’t charge or turn on. I double checked if everything is connected properly. I had the feeling that I didn’t break anything (but you never know).

I used different outlets, and all that basic stuff.

I reset the SMC (like 15 times after every new troubleshooting idea I found on the internet).

So I thought that it may be the magsafe 2 in-board. I bought a new one and installed it too. Still the same, my mac is just dead.

There are no burns or anything like that, my mac looks pretty nice (now that I cleaned it) from the inside.

Any suggestions?

Edit: I should also mention that the battery didn’t leak and there were no other fluids in the mac. I did a complete tear down and everything looks good for the naked eye.

Before you loose what power remains in your battery download this app CoconutBattery and get a snapshot of the apps window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question. Do a second snapshot if you can with the charger plugged in give it a moment to recognize the charger.

Thank you for the suggestion. Sadly, I cannot turn it on. I changed the battery, there is no charge in the new one or there is something else wrong with my macbook. I already recycled the old one because it was bloated and also empty (because it would have been more dangerous to get it out of the macbook if there would have been charge left).

@barbaravlad - This is likely going to take a bit of work! Its to early to tell if you have just a battery or a logic board issue (or both!)

Lets try this last gasp! Open the system disconnect the battery, press the button for a good minute and then plug in your MagSafe charger. Do you get any sign of life? Did the fan moved, did the screen blink?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Hallo Dan, I tried that but there was no sign of life. Just in case I did something wrong: I opened the Mac and disconnected the Battery from the Logic board. I left it open for the whole thing. I pressed the power button for 1,5min. I connected the charger, nothing happened, I pressed the power button, still nothing happened. I fear the worst.

Sadly, your system needs some deeper TLC here ;-{

While you could just replace the logic board on your own, you’ll also want to replace the battery as well.

You’ll need to think through the costs. Do keep in mind this is a window to upgrade the CPU and/or RAM as well! It all depends on what your current system offers.

If you have access to good Mac repair person nearby then they should be able to fix things too!

Ok thank you! I will try to get some cost estimates for the repair. Hope it’s not the battery too because it’s brand new... A new logic board is too expensive for me, I already had the best possible version for my mac.

Thank you for all the help. I feared the problem is a major one.

No. The charger is brand new and from Apple.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I unfortunately cannot find any schematics for that particular model. However the most likely thing that happened is that the Charge controller (which is known to simply die on some models) likely failed. This chip is usually responsible for creating PPBUS_G3H, and i would want to measure and see if its present. Although depending on your level of comfort with board level diagnostics it may be best to bring to a local shop and see if they can find the issue. (I cant verify without the schematics but) Some macbooks apple has worked with the manufacturer to create a custom version of a chip that cannot be purchased so such a repair may not be possible.

@imsrepair Thank you for your troubles! This is to advanced for me. Just to be sure: The charge controller should be located on the Logic board?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@barbaravlad - Yes, the charging logic is part of the main logic board.
