Hi I have a retina macbook Mid 2014 with intel Iris graphics and wondered if I could add discrete graphics to it as an upgrade?

This series came in two different configurations:

Intergrated Graphics

Dedicated Graphics

The logic boards are physically different! You can't add the GPU chip. You can only swap out the logic board which would be expensive!

If it was the 2016 or newer model with Thunderbolt 3 ports, I would have advised you to research the possibility of using an eGPU. I don't believe this is available for the model you have.

There are a few eGPU systems which work via Thunderbolt-2. At this point it would be a used unit.
