Why does my hero3 silver freeze up?

How do I know if the mother board is bad in my Hero3 Silver?

I was actually talkjng about the root software the board was loaded with initially.

Your best bet is the guide I gave you in my answer. It's not the root software but it is the OS. It's the best I could find, sorry!

We can determine if it’s a software problem or not if we factory reset your camera. If it’s a software problem it should be fixed by a factory reset. Factory resetting your camera will reset all settings you have configured! However, if you remove the SD card from the camera before doing a factory reset your videos and pictures on the SD card will be safe.

  • While The GoPro is off, press and hold down the shutter button (the top button).
  • While still holding the shutter button, press the power button (on the front of the camera).
  • The camera will now power on and it will reset to the original settings.

This does nothing. If I remove the battery hold the power button for a minute then reinsert battery it powers on and will work temporarily.

Looks like a factory reset didn’t help, nor was the storage full. I think your motherboard may be indeed kaput. Replacing it should get you back into business.

Update (11/20/2018)

You can try to follow this guide to update the software, which may solve your problem. I think there’s more then a software issue going on here, though.

I can get it to power on and take a picture or two or a video but then it locks up again. I finally got it to finish the up grade to 3.02.

Is it possible to reload the firmware on the camera?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@jasonclayton If a factory reset doesn't do anything to help there's likely a board level issue going on here. Replacing the motherboard is fairly inexpensive and will very likely solve your problem.

the storage might actually be full or something and it doesn’t want to work. try deleting some stuff on the storage.
