Computer Won't Turn On
This section covers a common issue many users face is their device not powering up at all and offers easy to fix solutions.
Battery Is Dead
One situation where the computer won’t turn on is because the battery is dead. If so, plug in the power adapter that came with the laptop into both an outlet and the computer’s charging port. Make sure the laptop’s charging indicator turns on. If not, try plugging the adapter into a different outlet. If that doesn’t work, refer to the section “Battery Not Charging Properly.”
Power Button Not Turning The Computer On
Another reason a computer won’t turn on is because of a hardware failure with the power button. Press the power button multiple times or hold it down for a few seconds. If that doesn’t work, you may need to replace the broken switch underneath the power button with a new one, which will most certainly fix the issue.
Battery Not Charging Properly
This section covers common issues where the battery in users’ devices aren’t charging/not charging correctly.
Faulty Power Adapters
If the battery isn’t charging properly, one culprit could be that the power adapter is faulty. You can check by plugging in the power adapter into the laptop and a working outlet. If the charging indicator doesn’t turn on, the power adapter is likely faulty.
Faulty Battery
Another possible cause to the battery not charging is that the battery itself is faulty. If you made sure it is the battery at fault and not anything else, see our replacement battery guide to replace the battery.
Faulty Charging Port
If you checked that both the battery and power adapter aren’t faulty, it could be due to a faulty charging port on the laptop. If so, see our replacement charging port guide to replace it.
Blue Screens
This section covers some solutions for when users’ screens are commonly stuck on a blue screen of death.
Incompatible Software
First, check for available updates for the software by going to Microsoft Store or the installation page. If there are no updates available, reinstall the software. If reinstalling the software does not fix the issue, the software is likely incompatible with the system software.
Faulty Drivers
Check the problem by first opening the device manager. It will give you a list of all of the devices connected to your computer and problematic devices will have a yellow triangle next to their name in the left column. Click on the problematic device and then select properties. Under the resources tab, check resource allocation and modify resource settings to stop driver conflict errors. Select update driver and it will install updates if the driver is outdated. Uninstall the driver if it is completely corrupted. Reinstall the driver after it has been removed.
Hardware Malfunctions
If you have recently installed hardware, remove it and reset your memory sticks. The memory sticks may also be outdated. If so, use windows troubleshooting. Disconnect USB devices and repair files system. Update device drivers, then restart it in safe mode, which should solve the malfunctioning system.
Unresponsive Trackpad
This section covers several common causes why the trackpad may not be responding correctly and offers some simple solutions.
Dirty Trackpad
Dirt and grime can accumulate on the trackpad over time and cause it to become unresponsive. Use a soft damp cloth to gently clean the trackpad. If the trackpad remains unresponsive, there may be some other underlying issue with it. Check below for some of the other common causes.
Disabled Trackpad Or Wrong Settings
If cleaning the trackpad does not fix the issue, it is possible that it is not set up properly. To modify the settings head to Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad. Make sure that the trackpad is enabled and that it is using the correct settings according to your system.
Out-Of-Date Driver
Drivers essentially tell the computer how to interact with your hardware. It is important to always keep them updated to make sure they work with the latest technology. Thankfully, many operating systems nowadays offer easy solutions to keep drivers up-to-date. On Windows 10 or 11, open Device Manager. Under the Human Interface Devices or Mice and other devices tab, you will be able to right click on any device and update its drivers. If this solution does not work, try reinstalling the driver by selecting the uninstall option. Windows will then attempt to automatically reinstall the driver.
Unresponsive Keyboard
This section covers common solutions to fix unresponsive keys/keyboard.
Dirty Keyboard
If the keyboard keys are dirty, try using a can of compressed air or an air compressor to clean the keys. If that doesn’t work, refer to our replacement guide about the keyboard to learn how to expose the internal keyboard components and use the air can or compressor to clean the underside of the components. After that, replace all components and see if the keyboard is working properly. If not, it could be due to a different issue.
Bad Keyboard Hardware
If the keyboard hardware is not working properly, it may be old or have some disconnected wires. Restart the laptop. If it's still not working, see if the problem is rooted in the keyboard’s hardware or if it’s a software issue in windows. Check your keyboard drivers and settings by going to the start menu and search device manager, then on the arrow to the left of “keyboard.” Right click your keyboard and choose “uninstall device”. Reboot the computer and it will automatically identify the computer keyboard and will install the latest driver for it. If it does not work check and see if you have the right keyboard layout. Click Start > Settings > Time & Language > choose English language. If it isn’t an issue with the keyboard software, see our replacement guide on how to replace the keyboard.
Laptop Does Not Recognize Devices Plugged Into USB Ports
This section covers common solutions for fixing faulty USB ports on the computer.
Dirty Ports
If your USB devices are not working properly, it is likely due to dirt or dust that has accumulated inside of the port. To clean a USB port, try using some of the methods mentioned above like blasting it with compressed air and then using a toothpick to clean out any remaining debris. Never insert any metal object as they could scratch and damage the port. If cleaning it does not work, then it is possible there is a problem with the actual hardware. Check below for more solutions.
Faulty USB Device
To determine whether you are dealing with a faulty USB device or a faulty USB port, try plugging the device into different slots or even using a different USB device to check. If the different device works, then the initial USB device is faulty. If none of them work, there is a high chance that one or multiple of the following components are faulty or damaged: the USB connection of your device, the wiring inside of the device cord (if applicable), or the device itself. Another common problem is that the USB ports have been improperly set up by your computer. Refer to the next section on how to fix this.
Faulty USB Ports
There are two main reasons why you may be dealing with faulty USB ports. The hardware may have been damaged or the computer is using the wrong settings. To fix the latter, head to the Device Manager on Windows and right-click on your computer’s name. Then, select “scan for hardware changes.” Another option is to click on the arrow next to “Universal Serial Bus devices,” right-click on the name of your USB device, and select “Uninstall device”. When you restart your computer, Windows will automatically reinstall the USB controllers. If these solutions do not fix the issue, then you are likely faced with faulty USB hardware. Follow our replacement guide to learn how to properly install a new USB port.
Speakers Have Low Volume Or Aren’t Playing Audio
This section covers common solutions for the speakers not playing any audio or not playing audio at the correct volume.
Dirty Speakers Or Blockage
One cause leading to incorrect/muted audio is if the speakers are dirty or blocked. Use a can of compressed air or an air compressor to blow out debris from the speakers. If it doesn’t fully solve the problem, check our replacement guide to learn how to expose the speakers and blow them out that way.
Volume Is Muted Or Low
Another cause the speakers aren’t playing audio correctly is if they are on mute. If so, either press the mute button to unmute the speakers or click on the volume indicator in the task bar and unmute them that way. Make sure they also have a high enough level to help check. Another cause of this issue is when the volume level is at 0 while the speakers are unmuted. In that case, turn the volume up, either by pressing the volume up key on the keyboard, which should be in the top row of function keys, or turning it up through the taskbar volume setting, which is typically on the bottom right corner of the screen.
Faulty Speakers
This may be because the speakers were not selected on the computer. To do so, go to the settings app, select sound from the main menu, and select the sound output that you want to use. If it doesn’t work, run an audio troubleshooter: in the taskbar, search for “audio troubleshooting,” select “Find and fix problems with playing sound.” Next, select the device you want to troubleshoot. Verify that all windows updates are installed and check the cables, plugs, jacks, volume, speaker and headphone connections. If none of those work, it is likely due to the built-in speakers being faulty. If so, refer to our replacement guide to replace the speakers.
Computer Is Overheating
This section covers some common solutions to fix issues with the computer overheating.
Dirty Fan
One cause leading to the computer overheating is that the fan is dirty and not circulating enough air. If so, look at our fan replacement guide to learn how to expose the fan and then use a can of compressed air or an air compressor to clean it out. After that, put everything back and check if the computer is cooling down during use. If not, it might be due to the fan being faulty.
Faulty Fan
If the fan is faulty, it is either due to the fan not turning because of bad fan wiring or the fan itself being faulty. In that case, refer to our fan replacement guide to learn how to replace the fan with a new one.
