Printer does not turn on
If the printer does not turn on, it may be experiencing the following problems.
Power cord is not connected
If the printer is not turning on, check that the power cord is plugged in and properly and securely connected to the printer.
Power switch is damaged
If the printer is still not powering on after checking that the power cord is plugged in, you may need to install a new power switch.
Motherboard is not functioning
If the replacement of the power switch still did not allow the printer to turn on, you must then proceed to installing a new motherboard board.
Printer does not print
If the printer does not print, it may be experiencing the following problems.
Printer status is off
If the printer is experiencing problems printing, first check that the device is connected to the power cable and the power is on. If you are experiencing difficulties turning the printer on refer the section above.
Ink cartridge is empty
If the printer is not printing, make sure the ink cartridge is properly installed and there is ink in the cartridge.
Paper tray is empty
If the printer still is not printing, make sure the paper tray is loaded properly with proper sized photo paper. If the paper tray is empty, you will need to load more photo paper into the paper tray and re-install the paper tray into the printer.
Printer is jammed
If the error indicator light is lit, then the printer is jammed. To fix a paper jam you must remove the paper tray, disconnect the AC power adapter, wait 5 seconds, then plug the printer back in. If the jammed paper does not automatically eject, carefully remove the paper manually. To help prevent further jamming, fan the paper in the paper tray to prevent the paper sticking together.
Printer does not connect to computer
If the printer does not connect to a computer, it may be experiencing the following problems.
Operating system is not compatible
If the printer is experiencing problems connecting to a computer, make sure your operating system of your computer is compatible with the printer. The Dell Photo Printer 540 supports Windows XP and 2000.
USB cable is not connected
If the printer is experiencing problems connecting to a computer with a compatible operating system, check that the USB cable is securely attached to the computer and to the printer.
Printer and computer status are off
If the printer still will not connect to a computer, make sure both the computer and the printer are on.
Printer is overheating
If the printer is overheating, it may be experiencing the following problem.
Cooling fan is not functioning
If the printer is overheating (you can tell by feeling or the fan will be making a lot of noise), check that the fan is performing at its required capacity. If this is the case, you will need to install a new cooling fan in the printer.
LCD screen does not power on
If the LCD screen on the printer is not powering on, it may be experiencing the following problem.
LCD screen is damaged
If the LCD screen is malfunctioning, first check that the power cord is plugged in and that the printer is turning on (to verify this, the power button should light up). If the printer is on but the LCD screen is still not turning on, you will need to install a new LCD panel. If the LCD screen is cracked or physically damaged beyond repair, you will need to install a new LCD panel as well.
Printer does not recognize memory card
If the printer is not detecting a memory card, one of the following problems may be occurring.
Memory card is not installed
If the printer is not detecting a memory card, check that the memory card is installed properly (faced up with the magnetic strip on the bottom side, fully inserted). You may try to take the memory card out and re-insert it.
Photos are incorrectly formatted
If a memory card is properly installed into the printer but the printer is unable read the memory chard, double check that the memory card has at least one uncorrected photo file saved on it.
Memory card reader is broken
If the printer is still unable to print a properly formatted photo from a correctly installed memory card, you will need to install a new memory card reader in the printer.
