Camcorder Will Not Power On
Your camcorder shows no signs of power.
Battery Pack is Exhausted
The battery will no longer produce a charge (battery out of “juice”). Ensure that the battery is fully charged before use.
Battery Pack is Not Inserted Properly
A faulty connection between the battery and the camcorder may be hindering the supply of power to the camcorder. Ensure the battery is inserted properly. Refer to this guide on how to remove and reinsert the battery.
Camcorder Cannot Communicate With the Battery Pack Attached
If the battery pack is fully charged but still does not power the camera, the battery pack may need to be replaced.
The battery pack must be approved by Canon. Battery packs not recommended by Canon cannot be used with this camcorder.
Faulty Power Adapter
If there is no power or if there is no charge being relayed into the battery pack when it is plugged into the wall outlet via the CA-110 power adapter, a new power adapter can be purchased online.
Digital Screen Stays Black
The screen stays black after the camcorder is powered on, and the camcorder will not power off unless battery is removed.
Faulty Ribbon Connection Between Screen and Motherboard
Loss of connection of the ribbon or a “bad ribbon” will end communication between the screen and motherboard. The ribbon connector can be accessed by removing the side panel of the camcorder. Refer to this guide on removing the side panel.
Stuck Focus Lens
A stuck focus lens may be interrupting your device's startup routine. The area around the focus lens could be dirty. You may consider using compressed air or camera lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean the lens and its surroundings. If all else fails, refer to this guide for removing the focus lens to ensure nothing is obstructing its path.
Faulty Screen
A faulty screen may be preventing the user interface from being displayed.
Cannot Save or Modify Files in Built-In Memory
Recordings on the internal memory cannot be saved or accessed.
Memory is Full
The camera cannot store information if its memory is full. Delete some recordings to free space or transfer recordings to your PC and initialize the built-in memory by touching the home button, accessing “Other Settings”, pressing the picture of the wrench, and hitting “Initialize [picture of microchip]"
Memory Writing Error
If the Vixia HF R70 was turned off while recording, the process of writing the file to the memory may have been interrupted . You will be given the option to try and recover the recording when the device is powered back on.
Cannot Save of Modify Files in External Memory
Recordings on the memory card cannot be saved or accessed.
Memory is Full
When the memory contains too many recordings (about 2500 for Windows users, 1000 for Mac OS users) , you may not be able to transfer recordings directly to a computer via USB or HDMI cable. A memory card reader must be used to transfer recordings from the memory card, or some recordings may need to be deleted to allow the device to transfer directly.
Memory Card is Not Initialized
The device cannot recognize the built-in memory or the memory card. This can be fixed by initializing the memory by touching the home button, accessing “Other Settings”, pressing the picture of the wrench, and hitting “Initialize SD”.
Incompatible Memory Card
Recordings can’t be played from a 64 MB or smaller memory card. Consider using a memory card of higher capacity. Check the Canon product page to ensure the correct memory card is being used. If a different memory card is necessary, use this guide to remove and replace the memory card with a new one.
Files are Missing or Corrupted
Forcing the camera to power off while saving may erase the files on your memory device. Initializing the hard drive will also erase all of its data. Avoid this by backing up the data before initialization.
Alternately, you may have a faulty memory card. Consider using a different one.
Insufficient Write Speed
Most likely the data transfer rate was too high for the memory card. Refer to the canon product page to find memory cards appropriate to your specific recording project needs.
Fragmented Memory
Repeated recording and erasing on a memory card may result in fragmented memory and the card will no longer save. Transfer recordings to your computer and clear the memory card. Insert the memory card back into the device and initialize the memory card.
Computer Does Not Recognize the Device
The computer does not recognize the device when plugged in via USB or HDMI cable.
The Computer Does Not Initialize the Device
Disconnect the USB cable and power off the camcorder. Wait a little while before powering on the camcorder and then restore the connection.
Computer Does Not Recognize the Device With a Particular Cable or Port
Connect the camcorder to a different USB or HDMI port on the computer.
Faulty Cable
If a faulty cable is not allowing data to be transferred between the camcorder and the computer, you can try using an alternate cable. Two cables are included with the device on purchase:
- IFC-300PCU/S USB Cable
- HTC-100/S High Speed HDMI Cable
If your computer supports the alternate cable, try transferring files using it, instead. Alternately, replacements for either cable can be purchased online.
Missing or Outdated Drivers
This problem occurs when the power supply was unexpectedly interrupted while writing to the external memory. Drivers can be downloaded from the Canon Vixia HF R70 product support page and then reinstalled.
Transfer Via Memory Card
Remove the memory card from the device using this guide. If your computer has a built-in SD-Card reader, you can plug in the memory card and transfer files directly, or you may need to purchase an external memory card reader.
Broken Ports on Computer or Device
Make sure that the port number does not conflict with the ports from other devices. If there is no port conflict, the individual ports on either the camera or PC may be broken.
Canon Specific Software Issues
Issues with the software provided by Canon may hinder your ability to view, edit, and upload videos.
Busy Servers
Most software issues are results of server problems. The server may not have enough space, or be busy because of a high volume of users. Try using it again at a later time.
Software Version Incompatible with OS
Go to the Canon Vixia HF R70 product page. Under "Drivers and Downloads" select "Software". Select your computer's operating system from the drop down menu just above, and then re-download the CameraWindow software. You may need to uninstall the previous version before installing the new, correct version.
Camcorder cannot connect to Wi-Fi
Your camcorder has problems connecting to a nearby router or device.
Multiple Wi-Fi Devices Are Trying to Connect to the Device
Go back and verify that only one device is currently trying to connect, then hit Retry.
Wireless Connection to the Camcorder Cannot Be Completed
Reset the camcorder’s settings using “Reset All” to reset the camcorder’s network name and passwords.
Erase the camcorder’s previous network settings from the device being used (iOS or Android) and reconnect the device to the camcorder again.
