Some new batteries are bad right out of the box (especially third party non Apple Chinese types). You can check your battery status under Applications->Utilities->SystemProfiler->Power. If you're certain there's been no damage to the magsafe or the battery connection on the logic board that's most likely what happened. Demand a replacement.
