How to measure capacitance (large capacitors)

  • The next two steps show how to safely measure larger electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors look like small cylinders. The iFixit multimeter can only measure capacitance up to ~100mF (millifarads).

  • Plug the black lead into the COM port. Plug the red lead into the right port.

  • Power down the circuit you're measuring, if you're measuring the capacitor while it's still connected to the circuit.

  • Make sure the capacitor is sufficiently discharged:

  • Turn the function dial to the DC volt mode.

  • Carefully touch the probes to the capacitor's leads/pads to measure voltage. Treat the circuit as a live circuit and be careful not to touch anything else with your probes.

  • Make sure the capacitor voltage is 10V or less. If it isn't, wait a minute to let the capacitor self-discharge, or use a capacitor discharge tool to discharge the capacitor.

  • As you measure the capacitor's voltage, the multimeter may slowly charge the capacitor up. Don't measure the capacitor for too long to prevent this from happening.

Come misurare la capacità (condensatori grandi)

I prossimi due passaggi mostrano come misurare in sicurezza i condensatori elettrolitici più grandi. Questi condensatori hanno l'aspetto di piccoli cilindri. Il multimetro iFixit può misurare la capacità fino a circa ~100mF (millifarad).

Collega il cavo nero nella porta COM. Collega il cavo rosso nella porta destra.

Spegni il circuito che stai misurando se stai misurando il condensatore mentre è ancora connesso al circuito.

Assicurati che il condensatore sia sufficientemente scaricato:

Ruota la manopola della funzione sulla modalità volt DC.

Tocca con attenzione le sonde ai terminali/pad del condensatore per misurare la tensione. Tratta il circuito come se fosse attivo e fai attenzione a non toccare altro con le sonde.

Assicurati che la tensione del condensatore sia di 10V o meno. Se non lo è, aspetta un minuto per permettere al condensatore di scaricarsi da solo, oppure usa uno strumento per scaricare il condensatore.

Mentre misuri la tensione del condensatore, il multimetro potrebbe caricare lentamente il condensatore. Non misurare il condensatore per troppo tempo per evitare che ciò accada.
