Introduction
Is your HP Photosmart C309g's printhead clogged, producing streaky output or not printing a certain color? This guide will show you how to unclog the printhead on this printer.
The cleaning steps will work with other printers, but the printhead removal steps and the steps to bypass the printhead initialization are tied to this model and similarly aged 564 printers-if you use a HP printer that doesn't use the 564/920 ink cartridges or a different brand printer, read the manual or find a online tutorial to find out how to remove the printhead first. The method for printhead removal should be the same on Web Connected 564 printers too, but double check the mechanism to be sure. The only thing to note is older cartridges will not work on web connected printers-you '''must''' use the updated cartridges since the programming on the chips is different, and the firmware blocks out the older cartridges. You can transfer the 564SETUP chips, but you will void the warranty if the printer craps out since this is technically a ink cartridge modification. Chip transfer is extremely risky the first time it's attempted too, since the likelihood of busting the chip is high if you have never done it. It's dobable, but watch that chip so it doesn't break! Practice on BAD cartridges BEFORE transferring the GOOD chip!
Here is some more information on [http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02534494&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en|compatibility with newer printers] and [http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02435884&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en|identifying old generation ink cartridges] to refer to. If the cartridges do not match what HP says for the updated chips, it will not work in the e-print printers.
Note on HP 920 printers: HP no longer makes printers with the 920 print cartridge, but this guide will be useful to people with these printers who have them, but don't assume the bypass proposed here will work. Also, as I am the author and wrote this back in 2010 and just started to clean this guide up '''I do not have plans to source out a HP 920 printer anytime soon.''' If you want to write a guide for the 920 printers and beat me to getting one, feel free to use the printhead removal instructions, since I know these printers to be the same, but don't use these pictures(or bypass) since this is not a HP 920 printer. The iFixit community will have to find a bypass for 920 printers, and I will help if I have time. If you want to try the HP 564 bypass on 920 printers, do so knowing it probably won't work(though I kind of expect it to.)
You can also try and bypass the initialization of the printhead on non-HP printers and other HP printers, but I will not guarantee the outcome for these printers-I only guarantee this method on the c309g and similarly aged printers with 564 cartridges since I know it to work on printers from this era for sure-HP's Web Connected printers may have protections in place to prevent this, even if bypassed correctly-you can try, but it may not work since HP updates the firmware on these printers and requires the firmware updates to use the web apps. '''If the ink purge bypass is not done EXACTLY as written, it will not work!'''. I have changed everything about this guide since this is originally from 2010 and things have changed a '''lot''' in 4 years, and wrote this at 16. I decided to correct this guide at 18, since I have a problem with Internet Connected printers-how I see it is I do not need my printer using 2 addresses to run on the network, or even 3 if ePrint doesn't run on the Wireless Print Server portion and is a dedicated connection. I turn it off anyway, so why even have it?
.
I would also like to mention as the original author this will '''not''' unclog every case of clogged printheads-if this doesn't work and the ink is confirmed good the printhead is damaged and you will need to replace the printhead. You can use the printhead removal steps to replace your printhead.
