Follow this guide to replace the Surface Connect port (aka Surflink) in your Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 (13.8‑inch).

You may need to replace the Surface Connect port if your laptop only charges when the cable is held in a certain position or if the connection is loose.

Before replacing the Surface Connect port, try using another charger to make sure the issue is with the port itself and not your current charger.

    • Gently slide one arm of your angled tweezers into the recess near the upper right edge of one of the feet.

    • You can also use the point of a spudger. However, you're more likely to damage the foot, if you're reusing it.

    • Use your tweezers to pry up and remove the foot.

    • The feet may eject very quickly—be careful not to lose them.

    • Repeat the process to remove the remaining feet.

    • To install a foot, align the pegs on the bottom with their cutouts in the frame and press the foot into place.

    • Throughout this repair, keep track of each screw and make sure it goes back exactly where it came from.

    • Use a Torx Plus 5IP screwdriver to remove the four 4.5 mm‑long screws (with washers) securing the lower case.

    • A strong strip of adhesive secures the Surface Connect port cable to the top of the fan. Heating the cable softens the adhesive, making it easier to separate.

    • Heat an iOpener and lay it on the Surface Connect port cable for two minutes to soften the adhesive.

    • Alternatively, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun. But be careful, as extreme heat can damage the battery.

    • Grip the Surface Connect cable close to the motherboard connector and peel the cable from the fan.

    • During reassembly:

    • Don't secure the trackpad cable with adhesive yet—wait until you've reconnected it. Otherwise, the cable may not reach its socket if positioned incorrectly.

    • If the tape is still sticky, you don't need to replace it.

    • If the adhesive is no longer sticky, or if you're replacing the fan and it doesn't have adhesive, apply a new strip of thin, double-sided tape to the top edge of the fan.
