Background
The Wii Remote is Nintendo's original motion-sensing controller for the Wii console released on November 19, 2006. The Wii Remote, nicknamed the "Wiimote" (Nintendo asserted that they do not officially refer to it by this name after they became involved in lawsuits regarding the nickname), is a rectangular controller, which, as its name suggests, resembles a TV remote (In order to make the motion controls more intuitive), with a set of buttons on the top, one trigger style button on the bottom, and a screen on one end. It is usually white, but was also sold in black, pink, blue, and red, with some limited edition styles sold as well. The controller includes a set of buttons on the top, a trigger style button on the bottom, and an infrared sensor at its tip. It also has a peripheral port on the bottom to connect the remote to the Nunchuk, which adds an analog stick and two shoulder buttons, the Classic Controller, used for SNES and N64 virtual console games, as well as compatible Wii games, and the Wii Motion Plus, a peripheral that adds a three-axis gyroscope, allowing for precise motion tracking even when the infrared sensor is unavailable (Such as when the Wii Remote is pointed upward).
The Wii Remote looks nearly identical to its successor, the Wii Remote plus, the only differences being that the Wii Remote Plus has text underneath the Wii symbol on the controller that reads, "Wii Motion Plus INSIDE", and, as the text makes obvious, has Wii Motion Plus built in, eliminating the need for the Wii Motion Plus peripheral. The Wii Remote and Wii Remote Plus were sold primarily in white, but they were both sold in alternative colors.
Identification
The model number for the Wii Remote is RVL-003. The number can be found in two locations: beneath the batteries and beneath the peripheral port.
