These use the TN-920 - it's basically cloned to death and the 3rd party toner is mature, so you can get a clone TN-920 and save a lot of money. Now Brother does split the drum and toner, so if it continues with a repair (see below) and a replacement toner, you will need an imaging drum.
A lot of the time it's clumpy buildup on the transfer roller on the toner side where the roller which spreads it onto the drum is bad - if you can open it without making a mess, you can sometimes revive it but 8/10 times on Brother toner it is low and needs a refill/replacement, or the toner has bad internal parts where the toner is not being properly distributed. Brothers have a system where they recycle the toner back into the cartridge as they do not store waste toner in the imaging drum, so they have a mechanism which recycles it back into the toner. If the toner feels "full" but you have problems with the print quality a lot of the time it's usually running on regurgitated toner that is dead.
