It sounds like for some reason your printer isn't using the black ink cartridge, but rather relying on the CYM cartridge to combine all three colors to make black. However, when your cartridge is out of yellow, you get purple instead of black.
What does the printer say about ink levels? Are your cartridges old and maybe dried out? Have you tried running the cleaning cycle on the printheads?

These Epsons print black only when the CMY inks are out - if the K ink is out, NOTHING happens. It's probably a clog from disuse or air in the printhead. Some early ones even had the extra fun extra problem (notably the older Artisan series like the 850) of putting the ink in the front and carrying it over tubing like how they do the ET- printhead setup, and those were super fun because you could cause issues with air in the lines.
I wouldn't do a power flush if it's present - it kills NVRAM counter pads. Basic purge MIGHT help, but don't touch the power flush.
