Released in 2020, this model retains the same overall design and build quality as the T480/T490, but with a revamped naming scheme in line with Lenovo's X-series Thinkpads and newer CPU/RAM configurations.

Can the motherboard be replaced?

Forget the BIOS password and according to Lenovo, they need to get in to run diagnostics and led into motherboard being replaced in which all in all, parts, labor and repairs would be over $600. I'd rather invest on a used laptop for $600 or do it myself.

Lenovo doesn't have a way to directly program the serial and other data to a replacement board like HP and Dell :-(. They're apparently so repairable you can't DIY program a motherboard and need to pay Lenovo to do it. You would need to find a leaked copy of their DMI tool whereas other vendors put the fields in the firmware such anyone can do it.

The issue I have here is Lenovo get high marks even from ifixit. But I don't consider them repairable when the DMI tool isn't readily available for pre 2025 models like it is with HP with the HP BCU and modern PowerShell tool.

Maybe this is a hyper specific complaint that's super niche but the reason I don't buy Lenovo is you can't do your own motherboard programming when it's in manufacturing mode (HP) or in the BIOS with Dell.
