Pixel 9a Screen replacement problem, I need advice

While removing the shattered screen I damaged the upper right "silver foam pad" described in step 21 below, also a little tear in the black taping above it

Should I attempt to install the new screen ($120) or return it and buy a new 9a for $300

The silver foam pad is just a grounding connection. Just re-form it as best you can; it will almost certainly still do its job, and besides, there are at least four more to do the job, so it's highly unlikely to cause you any problems. Likewise the tear in the tape is inconsequential; it's not going to hurt anything the way it is.

It's always advised to plug the screen in and reassemble far enough to power it on before you glue down the screen anyway, and by doing so you can verify that everything's working correctly before you disconnect the battery again and apply the adhesive.

Long story short (or TL;DR as they say), you're fine; you haven't done any serious damage and there's no reason the phone shouldn't work perfectly after you put it back together.

Jerry, thanks for the info. I went ahead and attached the screen, fired it up and all is well, unfortunately when I powered down the phone to finish I discovered the screen did not have the preinstalled adhesive nor was there the other screen adhesive listed in "Kit contents", so I will have to get the adhesive to finish my repair. It wasn't easy, but it's looking like it will be a complete success.

Thanks again

@jimd48312 Did you buy the screen alone, or the Fix Kit version? Neither one comes with the adhesive already attached to the screen, but the Fix Kit does include it as part of the kit. There are blue stickers on the screen, but they're just to protect the screen and aren't covering adhesive.

If you did get the fix kit and the screen adhesive was missing, contact the Store personnel at support@ifixit.com and I'm sure they'll send you one.

I did buy the "Kit" and after two emails I had the adhesive in a couple of days and the phone is like new again.

Thanks for your help
