Released in 1996 by Nintendo, second device in the Game Boy line

Powered but screen and sound crash

Hey everyone,

I am having a problem with my Game Boy Pocket. Most times it boots fine but when I move it, shake it or press a button it sometimes randomly crashes.

With a game inserted, the screen either goes blank, shows one line, freezes or shows random patterns. The sound also cuts out.

Without a game, movement causes the console to reboot or the screen to go blank.

However, the power led stays on constantly, which makes me believe it is not a battery or power issue. Would greatly appreciate if anyone has an idea what the issue could be!

Hi Dan!

Hmm, the only way to find out is to open it up!

When it's opened, do you mind to share some pictures with us regarding the motherboard (both sides)?

Then we can check what is going on there.

Most likely it's caused by something on the motherboard. Did you ever tried to repair the GameBoy Pocket?

Thank you for your reply. I added some pictures of the back and front of the motherboard. I have only opened it up to see if there are any obvious faults but the motherboard looks ok to me.

The strange thing is it stays powered but the display and the sound crash when you shake it or sometimes when you press a button. Any help would be amazing.

Thanks for the pictures! It does look fine! Power button is also not it. What you can try is a new shell! Maybe the battery is loosing contact, so that it fells out. But this should cause the LED to turn off for a few seconds…..

Did you tried a complete reflow? This could help. Maybe some solder connection is broken. Hopefully that works!!

It could be a cartridge reader issue. I tried to replicate your issue on my Gameboy Pocket, and I found that if I remove the game card while it's on everything freezes and crash. For you the problem could be a dirty cartridge reader that's causing poor contact with the game card and crashing the game. Try cleaning the cartridge reader pins with a brush and isopropyl alcohol, it could remove dirty stuff and improve the situation. If not then the cartridge reader is simply worn and you'll probably need to swap the whole thing with a new one. It's soldered on the motherboard though so make sure you know how to solder.

A picture of the insides of the cartridge reader could really help since it could help us locate the issue.

Mine's the lightless version, by the way, but the screen would display a freezed image so I guess it's similar to your issue.
