Since the battery is buried underneath the gas tank, you have to take the tank off to access it.

If you try to just loosen the nuts, you'll never get them tight again because the bolts will never have enough traction to tighten back up.

I've had mine for 21 years, I have sunk money into maintenance (parts aren't cheap), but I feel that having something that I know is good instead of buying another one is money in the bank.

It's still a PITA to do all that, but you should take the tank off and clean it anyway, I only use ethanol-free gas and filter it before it goes into the tank, but gas eventually breaks down (if you don't stay on top of it) and it starts turning into something that resembles something your wife made for you on your first sit-down meal together...

Be sure to disconnect the hose going to the carburetor from the gas tank, so I would also advise you doing this when it's low on gas.

Take good care of all of the parts (especially the grommets that the gas tank sits on), they will probably be brittle, and you might have to change those out too (not cheap...though I did replace mine anyway the last time out).

I'm surprised you haven't had to change it out by now; I'm now on battery 'three'.

I really like the unit, though I believe that B&S (who are the ones who actually built it) had two engineers working on the project and they hated each other...
