Asking here, since no way to directly ask iFixit (frustrating!)

I tried to post this via the site's "email" page, but it will not allow me to send it. Very frustrating to try to get basic information, let alone have a phone conversation or even a chat. Anyway, here is what I tried to ask:

There's a lot here to unpack!

Batteries have Cycle counts so you don't want one that has been used.

iFixit tests the batteries from the factory to make sure it's good.

As to the battery not being 100% batteries age!

Just sitting on a shelf which is why it's hard to find a battery which is smack 100% I've even seen batteries which are over 100% by 8% or lower at 92% because the chemistry has aged in the battery

As to the warning that's Apple for you!

I'm sure you take your car to the Ford dealer so the oil filter and oil are for your Ford or what ever. You don't go to the Jiffy Lube or other independent oil changing shops or do it your self getting the oil and filter from the auto parts shop.

As Apple is unwilling to set a standard for compatibility, 3rd parties are limited to what they have reversed engineered. You can also encounter Apple doing a firmware update which can effect things. That's been less of an issue these days.

Apple only recently offered direct sales of its parts, sadly your XR is not offered you will need to get Apple or one of their authorized service centers to replace the battery, but it will be more expensive. Here's a rundown of Apples policy, they are:

  1. Supported - Up to 5 years after the end of production. Full support for both software updates & hardware repairs.
  2. Vintage - Between 5-7 years after the end of production. When an Apple device becomes “Vintage” it will no longer receive routine software updates and isn’t guaranteed by Apple to be repairable at an Apple store or authorized service provider.
  3. Obsolete - 7+ years after the end of production. Obsolete products lose all support—no more repairs, system updates or security patches.

Dan, many thanks for the detailed answer!

Just one more point to add: though I haven’t actually tried yet at the Apple Store (there are several near me), apparently if I want a new OEM battery installed, their servers will update to the latest iOS whether I want to or not, a very bad policy in my opinion. My iPhone Xr (jailbroken) works very well. But I know for a fact that if were updated to iOS 18 it would perform very poorly.

Anyway, perhaps at the time of purchase I could request iFixit to have a battery pulled from the latest stock. I realize Xr batteries don’t sell much these days, but maybe there’s a date on the batteries that would allow someone to get one of the most recent batches. Just a thought.

Thanks again, Dan

@originalde16135 - you could try asking, I don't know how they store or how frequently they get restocked. A month or two won't matter it's a year or more that's no different buying AA or C batteries at the sleepy gas station Vs a fast moving game store running thru batteries.

Thanks again Dan. Thing is, I find no way to ask questions of iFixit, except here in the community. Emailing them about such things is apparently not allowed. Not even a pre-sale questions. Seems to me iFixit used to be a lot easier to contact. Even a live chat would be welcome. Oh well.

Hey, I was reading about you, and noticing all the ways you've been contributing not only here, but elsewhere. That's just great. I think we're about the same age. Can't trade for experience, or even buy it! 🤓
