sony CMT-EH26 can do everything but read cds

I have this old sony micro hi-fi component system CMT-EH26, it has been stuck in the shed for a year and before then it could play cds just fine, but now when ive been able to take it out and clean it (it was covered in very fine sawdust) it can do all of the usuall functions but read cds. so, the remote works, tape player works (havent tried recorder yet) audio in works with my phone, radio, ect

but basically whenever i put in the disc (label up) it starts reading, then tells me theres no disc inside. ofc its a problem with the laser but idk how to fix it, or replace it because i cant find what model/type the laser is.

i do not plan to fix it myself, i only want to know how expensive the laser will be to replace so i know no technician is scamming me (the techs in my area have a very bad reputation, i dont think every technician does this and i do not mind paying well for their labour but, i dont trust it yk) so ill get the technician to both replace the laser and clean the inside because i dont trust myself either.

also its my first time using this website and i do not know how to add different models so i think its an only admin/mod thing so if someone could also add the CMT-EH26 model to the list, it would be great for not only me but other people 👍

thank you so much for reading, hope you have a good one today :3

Hi @davidmdavie

You said that ".. it starts reading..." so assume that the disc is spinning, is this correct?

Looking at the user manual the laser lens may be easily accessible, so you may be able to gently clean the laser lens using a Q-tip lightly moistened with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronic parts stores), just in case it is a dirty lens that is preventing the disc from being read.

If the disc in not spinning (does the label move position indicating that it has turned?) then it may be a drive belt problem

i have cleaned the lense and the cd, and the disc is spinning (i can press a button down to trick the player into thinking its closed) so it might be a drive belt problem then. thanks btw

ah sorry i didnt interpret the comment correctly, its probably not a drive belt problem.
