“Change battery pack” only when AUTO mode selected

I recently found my old Canon and batteries, and let both charge to full power. When I tested the camera, everything seemed to be working until I switched it to AUTO mode. The camera says “Change battery pack” and shuts off, but I’ve changed it and attempted to clean the contacts with no luck.
