Dropping breaker as soon as plugged in

I have a kent c4 that's dropping breaker as soon as it's plugged in. What should be the best way to troubleshoot it and what could be possible reasons for this problem. Thanks in advance!

Hi @tooltech92262

If the breaker trips as soon as the cleaner is plugged in it could be due to one of the following:

  • Faulty power cord i.e. short circuit in the cord either Active (hot) wire → Earth wire or Active wire → Neutral wire.
  • Faulty wiring in the machine i.e. Active wire touching (frayed, rubbing etc) the metal chassis which is earthed (the earth wire is normally connected to the chassis)
  • It could also be a faulty motor winding but this would also mean that the on/off switch would have to be in the operated position or it is faulty.

To check all of the above you would need to have a DMM (digital multimeter) and with the power disconnected entirely from the cleaner, use the DMM's Ohmmeter function to start testing why there is short circuit i.e. 0.00 Ohms, between the Active (hot) wire and earth or between the Active and Neutral wires from the power cord plug right through and into the machine parts.

Here's a service manual that may help.
