Whirlpool WDF540PADM1 intermittant pump (I think)

It appears that this machine has an issue with the pump that provides water to the spray arms. At one point it wasn't running at all (this pump) I took it apart and applied 120V to it, it ran fine so I put it back together. Without any real changes, it seemed to work but not fully, at least I don't think so. This is where it gets funky. It runs fine at times, but not all the time. There are times during the run that the machine is dead silent (not the drying cycle). The first run I did I ran a one hour wash and it seemed close to a successful run, but I wasn't impressed with the quality of the cleaning.

Ran it in a normal mode and same thing, it ran, the soap came out, and it completed the cycle-but the quality of the clean was poor. In this mode again, the machine goes silent at times when it should be washing (I think). But at the beginning of the cycle, I know those spray arms were moving.

I read about a possible intermittent connection with the latch. That would seem to make sense, but I cleaned this with soap and a light sandpaper to make sure it is making an electrical connection. Plus, when it is silent, I move the latch in every direction I can, and the pump doesn't turn on.

I may be off base with my assumption in that this pump is not running all the time that it should, but that is certainly what it seems.

Any thoughts are very much appreciated!

Hi @chrisstillman

Here's the tech sheet for the dishwasher.

Go to p.3 to view the procedure to run the Diagnostic cycle and check what error codes are shown.

If there's a 4:3 wash motor error code shown go to p.8 to see what to check.

Given that it's seems intermittent, on p.4 there a diagram of the wash motor operate circuit that may also help. Also check for fractured wires in the wiring harness where it leaves the door to enter the body of the machine to get to the wash motor etc and for loose/corroded connections to the control board.

If you find the problem and it's a faulty part that needs replacing, here's the parts list that is useful. Locate the wanted part in the list and note the part number that is shown with it. Search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best.

Thank you! Ran into a different and bigger problem, I'll circle back to this. Awesome info, thanks so much, I hope to get back to you soon.

OK folks, been a delay. The dishwasher seems to be running great now, but I am not 100% certain of what the difference is. This is what I did;

Cleaned the filters in the tub (were not that dirty, if at all), Checked the spray arms, but honestly they were clean already, Used powdered detergent.

This is what I think made a difference; I took the pump out and again confirmed 120V would run it. I left it on for a good minute to make sure it seemed healthy. BUT, when I put it back I bought a new clamp for it. The mounting of this pump is a poor design at best. The clamp that was in there originally, I didn't know how to re-use if that is even possible. The clamp that I put in there was wider than the opening for it to sit in. I really didn't think this would be a problem, but maybe this poor seal caused my intermittent problem. No idea but all good now. THANK YOU ALL!
