Repair and disassembly information for the 2020 refresh of the MacBook Air model A2179 with an Intel processor that was released in March 2020.

MacBook Air shuts off randomly when on battery power

For the last year or so, this Macbook Air has been shutting off randomly when it is on battery power. This happens at various charge levels, as high as 70%. When this happens, it can only be turned on after plugging it in, however once it is plugged in, it turns right back on and immediately shows the screen as it was before the shut-off. It can then immediately be unplugged and used on battery power for a long period of time. This happens after about 1-2 hours of activity while using the laptop on battery power only. I have tried SMC and PRAM resets, as well as restarts. The system has had no liquid damage or drops that I am aware of. Thank you very much!

@danj Thank you so much! I just completed the check with CoconutBattery and uploaded the pictures with the laptop both plugged in and unplugged. I will try to take off the bottom plate to inspect as well.

Well... it does look like the battery is on its last legs🙁 here we can see the load cycles are 862, at best you can get to 1000 which is the limit. But not all battery's make it that far. Age and if the system is mostly used tethered to AC most of the time ~800 is about the limit when things start acting up. Even the Battery Health is already in the Red as well. Then we get to the batteries temp this battery is running Hot! Which is also not a good sign 30°C is about the point of cutoff. Note the charge Wattage is slightly less than the discharge. If you were to put the system into sleep or better yet shut it down fully the loss of the load would allow the battery to fully charge (at least what is was able to).

Think of it this way the bath tub is draining faster than you are filling it! But that will only buy you a bit more time.

Your Battery maybe failing. Download this gem of an App to get a better idea what's happening CoconutBattery. Take a snapshot of the Apps main window so we can see the details posing it here.

Have you removed the bottom plate to inspect things? You might want to do that as one cell maybe swollen.
