Repair, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for the Xbox Series X, Microsoft's 4K gaming console. The Xbox Series X was released alongside its companion console, the Xbox Series S, on November 10th, 2020.

How to fit an ARGB fan inside a Xbox Series X?

I'm a PC enthusiast, and naturally I want to fit RGB lights on every single device I own🤓

Anyway, my Xbox is getting very dusty, and forza horizon 5 constantly stutters(I haven't encountered that issue when I first got it). I have been planning to clean it for a long time, but one day I looked at my PC's ARGB fans and thought: Why don't I fit it in the Xbox? From what I can tell from the guide, the fan inside the Xbox uses a 4-pin connector, but the socket is slightly different from what you'd expect on a PC. I have some experience in soldering, and had successively connected some severed fan cables in my PC together, so I figure it wouldn't be hard to connect the Xbox socket to a normal PC case fan. For the lighting I can just use an external controller for motherboards that don't support ARGB, and anyway some fans by Cooler Master lights up on their own without controllers anyway.

The main problem is anchoring the fan. The Xbox uses a custom fan, from what I can tell from the iFixit guide, the fan is a 130mm fan custom-made by Microsoft (with Master Chief on it), and normal fans would not fit. Can somebody tell me how to anchor a 120mm fan on the Xbox? Or, can anyone help me find a 130mm fan that comes with RGB lighting? I'm thinking about long screws that would somehow poke through the grille on the front(very convenient anchoring points), but that's just ugly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi!

Yes, it is a custom fan. But you can probably get it fit. You can solder the fan wires to the pins to get it working, or replace the socket connector with one which they use on a PC motherboard (this will be the most nice good looking solution).

Regarding the fan, there are multiple options to get it fixed. Long screws OR brackets, in the worst case ti-rips.

Thanks a lot! Now I've got the wiring figured out, can you perhaps help me source a 130mm RGB fan please? All I can find is 140mm ones, and those wouldn't fit without cutting things inside the Xbox.

My pleasure!

Nope, you probably won't be able to find a 130mm rgb fan (Microsoft won't make it that easy). I'm afraid you need to buy a 120mm or 140mm fan and customize it to make it work.

I found this, but not sure if the fan would fit: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Multicolor-Adju...

Hmm... That might work, but I doubt I can anchor it. I still can't figure out a way to make the fan stay where it's supposed to without making a mess on the outside. I'm thinking about sticking RGB strips in it now, and putting a USB control hub somewhere inside. I suppose I'll come up with something. But anyway, thanks for your help!

That will be more easy yes!

No problem.

An LED strip will give more lightning and is way easier to add.
